Businesses get ￡1billion from Gordon Brown Gulf tour

British business executives on Gordon Brown's tour of the Gulf have gained business worth ￡1 billion, Peter Mandelson has claimed.
ゴードン・ブラウンの中東歴訪にくっついていったイギリス企業の幹部は、10億ポンド相当のビジネスをゲットした、とピーター・マンデルソン。
Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, said the Prime Minister was "worth his weight in gold" to British firms during the four day visit to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
ビジネス担当大臣、マンデルソン卿は、サウジアラビアおよびアラブ首長国連邦への4日間に亘る歴訪の間、首相はイギリス企業にとって「体重と同じ重さの金塊に値した」と語った。
そら重そうだわ（笑）。
However, several of the firms who have benefited from the Prime Minister's support this week are also resisting pressure from ministers and consumer groups to do more to help British households facing higher bills.
しかし、今週首相の支援に恩恵を被った数社は、物価高に直面するイギリスの家計をもっと支援しろ、という閣僚や消費者団体からの圧力に抵抗している。
Executives from firms including Shell, Centrica and HSBC, were aboard Mr Brown's chartered jet, enjoying exclusive access to the Prime Minister, Lord Mandelson and Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary.
シェル、セントリカ、HSBCを含む企業の幹部は、ブラウン氏のチャーター機に同乗し、首相、マンデルソン卿、そしてエド・ミリバンド・エネルギー担当大臣に特別に接触する機会を得た。
Falling oil prices have sparked calls for petrol and household gas prices to be reduced.

But Centrica, which owns British Gas, has said it has no intention of delivering lower fuel bills in the near future, and oil executives on the trip have privately admitted that petrol prices are unlikely to fall significantly soon either.

同じく派遣団に同行しているHSBCのCOO、デイヴィッド・ホッジキンソンも、歴訪中、木曜日には利下げが予測されているイギリスでも、HSBCが住宅ローンの金利を大幅に下げることはないだろう、と述べてブラウン氏に恥をかかせた。
Lord Mandelson lauded Mr Brown's efforts on behalf of British industry before the Prime Minister's party flew back to London. The total value of the deals struck this week will be ￡1 billion, he said.
首相一行がロンドンに戻る前、マンデルソン卿はブラウン氏のイギリス産業の代理としての努力を絶賛した。
今週締結された契約の総額は、10億ポンドになるだろう、と彼は言った。
Lord Mandelson told journalists in Dubai that many of the deals would not have been possible without the intervention of the Prime Minister, whose standing he said has been raised profile by his response to the financial crisis.

He said: "We have a British Prime Minister who people see as a first mover.

The Business Secretary did not dispute suggestions that the business delegation's companies had failed to "play their part" for consumers. But he said that the Government had no choice but to help them prosper.
ビジネス担当相は、派遣団に加わった幹部の企業は、消費者のために「一役かって」いない、との意見には異論を挟まなかった。
しかし彼は、政府には企業の反映を支援する以外に選択肢はない、と語った。
He added: "British jobs, British prospects, depend on our being able to sell market goods and services into expanding sectors like this. We need to be the partner of choice in these expanding economies."
そしてこう付け加えた。
「イギリスの雇用、イギリスの将来、これは商品とサービスをこのような成長セクターに売り込む能力にかかっている。我々はこれらの成長国で選ばれるパートナーにならなければならない」。
このなりふり構わぬところがマンデルソンですねえ。

忌み嫌われてはいますが、こういう時期には、こういう面の皮の厚い悪魔のプリンスが必要なんでしょうねえ。
まあ、がんがれ…って、成果が出ちゃうと2010年の総選挙もまたまたまた労働党勝利！ってことになるので、これはよして欲しいんだけども…。
Mr Hogkinson said that the ministers' help had been invaluable to his networking, saying: "It's been a great visit.
ホッジキンソン氏は「素晴らしい歴訪の旅だった」として、閣僚等の支援は自分のネットワーキングには非常に貴重だった、と語った。
"We have had super visits with business - it helps having such a high level delegation."
