Mainland Chinese and Taiwan officials signed a series of trade agreements as confidence boosting measures on the highest level visit to the island by a representatives from Beijing
中国政府最高官による台湾訪問での信頼強化措置として、中国と台湾の当局者は数々の貿易協定を結んだ。
Chen Yunlin, who is head of the mainland body charged with overseeing relations with Taiwan, signed the deals with his Taiwanese opposite number, Chiang Pin-kung.
対台湾関係担当機関の代表を務めるChen Yunlinは、台湾側のカウンタパート、Chiang Pin-kungと協定に署名した。
The deals, several of which flesh out earlier agreements, cover direct air flights between the two historic enemies, direct cargo and postal links, and food safety - a sensitive issue in the wake of scandals involving tainted milk on the mainland.
先に結んだ協定でも具体的になっていたものを幾つか含む協定は、歴史的敵国間の直行便就航、直送貨物便、郵便網の設立、食品安全性（本土での汚染ミルク事件後はデリケートな問題だ）に関わるものだ。
They are being used as tokens of improved relations across the Taiwan straits, after years of hostility.
これらは、長年の敵対関係の後の、中台関係改善の印として利用されている。
The thawing of relations between the two sides dates back to March, when a new president, Ma Ying-jeou, was elected on the island, promising not to push for legal separation between the two.
双方の関係改善は、台湾の正式な独立を推し進めることはない、と約束する馬英九新総統が台湾で選出された3月に遡る。
China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which has been ruled separately since the civil war in 1949, and threatens to invade if it ever declares independence.
中国は、1949年の内戦以来、統治が分離している台湾の主権を主張しており、独立宣言をすれば侵略すると脅している。
Mr Ma's predecessor Chen Shui-bian claimed that Taiwan was a "sovereign nation", and has vociferously opposed Mr Ma's attempts to move closer to Beijing.
馬氏の全員者である陳水扁は台湾は「主権国家」だと主張し、馬氏が中国政府に近寄ろうとするのを、喧しく反対していた。
Yesterday Mr Chen said his successor should be investigated for "sedition", saying he had violated Article 104 of the constitution, which bans "conspiracies with foreign governments to overthrow the island's government".
昨日陳氏は、「外国政府と台湾政府転覆を目論むこと」を禁止する憲法第104条に違反したとして、後任者を「煽動罪」で捜査すべきだと述べた。
"The People's Republic of China is our enemy, but since he took office, Ma has publicly embraced 'one China' and accepted the idea of 'eventual reunification’ with China," he said.
「中華人民共和国は敵だが、彼が政権に就いて以来、馬はあからさまに『一つの中国』を容認し、中国との『最終的な統一』という考えを受け容れた」と彼は言った。
Mr Chen's visit has so far managed to avoid the problems encountered on an informal preparatory trip last month by his deputy, Zhang Mingqing, who was mobbed by pro-independence protesters and forced to the ground while visiting a temple in the island's south.
陳氏の訪台はこれまでのところ、先月の非公式な準備訪問であったような問題を何とか回避している。

Protesters gathered at Mr Chen's hotel before the visit but were cleared away by police.

The Taiwanese and Chinese economies are already heavily linked, with Taiwanese-owned manufacturers of everything from iPods and laptops to brand-name shoes running huge factories across the mainland.
台湾と中国の経済は既にしっかりと結びついており、iPodからラップトップ、ブランド物の靴まで、ありとあらゆるものを作る、台湾人の巨大工場は本土全域に広がっている。
But the deals signed yesterday should smooth that trade further. Until recently, all flights between the two had to travel via Hong Kong or Macau, while cargo vessels had to travel via Okinawa in Japan.
しかし、昨日締結された協定は、更に貿易を円滑にするだろう。

The agreement triples the number of weekly direct flights to 108, and expands the number of airports eligible to 21. It also adds 60 cargo flights per month.
この協定で一週間の直行便の便数は3倍の108便に増え、発着空港の数も21に増える。
また、空輸便も月60便増やされる。
Cargo ships will now be allowed to sail directly across the 100-mile wide strait, cutting journey times by up to 27 hours.
貨物船はこれで100マイルの海峡を直接横断出来るようになり、航行時間を最長27時間短縮することとなる。
