The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) was unanimous in its decision to stop pumping emergency money into the economy this month, despite the fact it has forecast below-target inflation over the medium term.

Minutes of the MPC's February meeting showed members voted 9-0 not to extend quantitative easing (QE), which effectively ended the £200bn programme because the full amount had been spent on asset purchases by the end of January.

Economists had predicted a split decision – with one member voting to extend QE – given that the Bank's latest Inflation Report last week assumed inflation would be below the 2pc target for much of the three-year forecast period.

However, the minutes showed the committee did discuss a potential increase in QE, but ultimately agreed it would not be the appropriate course because the assumed inflation undershoot was not "overwhelming... and so did not suggest an immediate need for a further relaxation of the policy stance".
しかし、MPCは確かにQE拡大の可能性を話し合ったものの、最終的には停止が妥当であるとの合意に達した、と議事録は示した。
この決断の理由は、推測されるインフレ未達は「圧倒的ではなかった。従って、緩和的政策スタンスを続ける必要性が直ちにあると思われない」というものだった。
Demonstrating the finely balanced decision, the MPC said there was a risk inflation expectations could rise if it signalled more QE. It added: "For some members, there also remained risks that adding to the size of the asset purchase programme might increase the chance of unwarranted increases in asset prices."
MPCは非常に微妙にバランスをとった決断を示して、QE継続をほのめかせば、インフレ期待が上昇する危険性があるとし、次のように付け加えた。

The MPC also voted unanimously to hold interest rates at 0.5pc. "Against a background of uncertainty we expect the MPC to leave policy on hold for some time," said David Page, economist at Investec.
MPCは金利を0.5%に据え置くことについても、全会一致で可決した。

The MPC stated at the time of the February decision that it would extend QE in the future if it judged it necessary.
