David Cameron gives a passionate address in Edinburgh as he says Britain is 'holding its breath' for referendum vote and admits: 'I care for my country more than my party'

デイヴィッド・キャメロン英首相がエジンバラで情熱的なスピーチを行い、英国は投票を「固唾をのんで見守っている」としながら「私は党よりも国を重視する」と認めました。

David Cameron has pledged to stay on as Prime Minister if Scotland becomes independent but urged voters not to break up the union just to give the "effing Tories a kick".

デイヴィッド・キャメロン英首相はスコットランドが分離独立しても首相であり続けると宣言し、有権者に「忌々しい保守党にお灸を据える」ためだけに連合を崩壊させないよう強く訴えました。

In an passionate address in Edinburgh, Mr Cameron said that he will remain Prime Minister in the event of a Yes vote to "make that [independence] happen"

エジンバラで行った情熱的なスピーチの中で首相は、自分はYESの票決が出ても「（独立を）実現させるために」首相であり続けると述べました。

But an emotional Mr Cameron at one point appeared close to tears as he spoke about the "heartbreak" he would feel if Scotland voted for independence.

しかし、スコットランドが独立を票決した場合は「心を引き裂かれる」と語りながら、キャメロン首相が目を潤ませる場面もありました。

He said: "If Scotland votes for separation that would have to be respected by the rest of the United Kingdom. And as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom I would have to make that happen.

首相は次のように述べました。
「スコットランドが分離独立を票決した場合、英国のその他の地域はこれを尊重しなければならない。また、英国の首相として、私はそれを実現させなければならない」

"It would be a heartbreaking job to have to do, to break up this family of nations that has been such a success."

「それは心を引き裂かれる仕事、これほど成功してきた国家のグループを解体する仕事になるだろう」

Mr Cameron also said that Britain is "holding its breath" ahead of the vote. He said: "As we come into the final days of this vitally important (vote), be in no doubt the rest of the UK is watching, listening, holding our breath. And we care passionately about this United Nations and we would really be desperately sad to see it torn apart.

また、英国は投票に先駆けて「固唾をのんでいる」としました。
「この極めて重要な（投票）日に向けた最後の数日間を迎え、スコットランド以外の英国が注目し、耳を澄ませ、固唾をのんでいることは疑いようもない。我々はこの国家の連合を真剣に考え、それが引き裂かれるのを見るのは極めて悲しいことだろう」

"I don't want my children to grow up in a world where if they choose Edinburgh University they're going to be in a capital of foreign country. I care more about my country than my party."

「エジンバラ大学進学を選んだら外国の首都に行くことになる。私はそんな世界で自分の子供達に育ってほしくない。私は私の党よりも私の国の方が大切だ」

He said that some people in Scotland think that they can use their vote as a protest against the "effing Tories". However, he warned that a decision on independence is irreversible and has ramifications which will last for a century.

首相は、スコットランドの一部の人々は「忌々しい保守党」へのお灸として票を使えると思っていると言いました。
しかし、独立に関する決断は不可逆的なものであり、その影響は長期的に続くのだと警告しました。

The Prime Minister said that nobody should "lecture" or "hector" the people of Scotland as it is "their decision".

更に、それは「彼らの決断」なのだから、何人もスコットランドの人々を「説教したり」「叱ったり」してはならないとしました。

He said that in the event of a Yes vote he would "help" to make independence happen.

YESの結果が出た時は、独立の実現を「支援する」と言いました。

However, he said he wanted to ensure that everyone in Scotland "knows the scale of the decision being taken".

しかし、スコットランドの誰もが「下される決断の規模をわかっている」ことを望むとしました。

He said a No vote will be "the best of both worlds" as the Scottish government will be given extra powers by Westminster.

スコットランド政府は中央政府から権限強化を認められるのだから、NOの結果は「双方にとって最善」の結果になるだろうと述べました。

Mr Cameron has been accused of presiding over a lacklustre campaign that has failed to properly combat Alex Salmond's Yes campaign.

アレックス・サモンド氏のYESキャンペーンに対抗出来ない、精彩を欠いたキャンペーンを率いたとして、キャメロン首相は批判を受けています。

He denied that he had only now "woken up" to the prospect of a Yes vote following polls showing Scotland is on course for independence.

スコットランドが分離独立しようとしていることを示す世論調査結果を受けて初めてYESの可能性に「目覚めた」という批判に反論しました。

However, he said: "In the last days of the campaign, let's make sure the emotional passion comes through."

しかし「キャンペーン最後の数日間は、気持ちが伝わるようにしよう」と言いました。

He also warned that Scotland could "run out of money" if it goes independent. MPs and ministers have warned that Mr Cameron will come under intense pressure to resign if Scotland leaves the UK.

また、スコットランドは独立すれば「資金が底を尽きかねない」と警告しました。
下院議員や閣僚等は、スコットランドが独立すれば首相は猛烈な辞任圧力を受けることになるだろうと警告しています。

Me Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg decided not to attend Prime Ministers' Questions today and instead visit Scotland in a bit to take momentum away from Mr Salmond's campaign.

キャメロン首相、ミリバンド労働党首相、クレッグ自由民主党首相は今日のPMQ出席を取り止め、その代わりにサモンド氏のキャンペーンの勢いを削ぐべくスコットランド入りしました。
