クリスマス・リスニング教材 サンタはいるの？
これから、教室での教材のなかから、いくつかを紹介します。
リスニング、会話練習を中心としたレッスンの教材から抽出したものなので、読むだけでは十分効果的だと言えませんが、参考にしていただけたらと思います。

「ヴァージニアさん、答えはイエス。サンタはいますよ。」
中級向け：以下のURLのサイトの朗読を聴き取ることが課題のレッスン向けの教材。訳はありませんが、語彙などの註は多く入れました。
授業で扱う機微に触れる部分は、残念ながら読むだけでは学習できませんが、引用サイトの朗読と文字を何度も行き来することで、かなりの効果を上げることができるでしょう。
アメリカでは大変有名な記事なのですが、あまりに多く引用された結果、「偽善」や「商業主義」を感じとる方がいても不思議はありません。しかし、文章構成法、レトリックはまことにしっかりしたもので、中、上級のクラスでは分析の対象にしたいと思います。
● 仮定法が文法上の課題。緑の字にしてあります。反現実だったり、婉曲だったりの説明はありませんが…。
● 飛躍、省略、反語疑問、二重否定が多く、「国語力」を必要としますが、何度も聴き、読むことで、効果的に文が構成されていることが分かると思います。
● 註が多くなったので、比較構文、語順などの解説はあえてしませんでした。

解説： Now that this letter wound up on the desk of a newspaper man named Frank Church. This is what he replied and printed in the paper that year:
wound up --- = ended up----：しまいに～することになった reply返答する

- VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except (that which) they see.
wrongは「人の意見が間違っている」という意味。人格全体に対し間違っているというわけではない affect（悪い）影響を与える skepticism (scepticism)「信じる」ということを否定する態度：懐疑主義と訳される（唯物論に近い） age時代 exceptを除いて that which = what（こと、もの）
- They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.
● can be存在しうる
● which以下は、nothingを限定している。聴き取りにくい箇所である。
comprehensible：「 understandable理解可能な」だと、理解できない理由が対象にある可能性がありますが、comprehend（「含む」）という動詞からくるので、「小さな頭の守備範囲外にある」ということになり、理解できない理由が人間の方にある、という意味がでる。
- All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, (as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.)

- The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

nothing else：ほかになにもない abiding不変の = eternal so（原著では省略されている）は、faith, fancy, poetry, love, romanceと比べてという意味。
- No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
● make glad the heart of childhood = make the heart of childhood glad：子供の心を喜ばせる svocがsocoの形になっている。
