Indian stock market rattled by market turbulence

It was Bedlam outside Jeejebhoy Towers, India's stock exchange in the financial capital, Mumbai, as thousands of sweating and enraged investors crowded outside, shouting slogans against federal finance minister, P Chidambaram. They tried demolishing an ornate bull's statue outside, but were dispersed by police.

金融の首都ムンバイにあるインドの株式市場、Jeejebhoy Towersの外にあるベドラム。
その外には数千人の汗だくになって怒り狂った投資家が、P・チダンバラム財務相を非難するスローガンを叫びながら集まっていた。
彼らは外に作られた派手な雄牛の彫刻を破壊しようとしたが、警察に解散させられた。

"It's been a bloodbath. All my investments had vanished in a few hours," retired military officer Vijay Tiwari said.

Mumbai's main Sensex stock index fell 9.8pc within minutes of opening, triggering an automatic one-hour halt. It recovered to close down 4.97pc, while the rival National Stock Exchange fell 5.96pc.

Analysts said tens of thousands of normally conservative middle class investors had, over the past few months been seduced by India's booming markets to invest their life savings in stocks, hoping to get rich quick.

"I'm beggared," bemoaned Ajay Bhatt, a retired government official. "I have been paid back in full for my greed."

The government rushed to assuage a financially aggrieved public. "The crash does not affect long-term sentiment. We should not be bothered by the West's economy," Mr Chidambaram said when trading was temporarily suspended.

政府は酷い目に遭った一般大衆を大急ぎで癒そうとした。
取引が一時停止になった際「このクラッシュは長期的センチメントに影響を与えるものではない。西側経済に煩わされるべきではない」とチダンバラム氏は言った。

He appealed to investors for calm but few cared. "All politicians offer placebos but never have to suffer the consequences of such a setback," said college lecturer Neel Kamal Jolly, whose modest share portfolio had swiftly depreciated.

彼は投資家に冷静になるよう訴えたものの、聴く耳を持つ者は殆どいなかった。
「どいつもこいつも政治家は気休めばっかりで、こんな大失敗の結末に苦しむ羽目になったことは一度もないんだ」
とそのささやかなポートフォリオの価値がさっさと減ってしまった大学講師のNeel Kamal Jollyが言った。
