Silvio Berlusconi's personal life would never have become a scandal and ended up in the courts had he been gay, his friend Vladimir Putin has told the Italian media.

シルヴィオ・ベルルスコーニ前伊首相はゲイだったら、私生活がこれほどスキャンダルになることも裁判沙汰になることもなかったビッチ、とお友達のウラジーミル・プーチン露大統領がイタリアのメディアに語りました。

"Berlusconi is being tried because he lives with women," said the Russian president.

「ベルルスコーニが裁判にかけられてるのは、女と生活してるからだよね」

"If he was homosexual, no one would have lifted a finger against him."

Mr Berlusconi, who was prime minister of Italy three times before having to step down in 2011, has vowed to stay in politics despite having the threat of expulsion from parliament hanging over him.

2011年に辞任を余儀なくされるまでイタリア首相を3期務めたベルルスコーニは、議会から追放されそうになっているにも拘らず、政界に留まると誓っています。

He is almost sure to be stripped of his seat in the Senate, the upper house of parliament, in the coming weeks, after being convicted of massive tax fraud last month.

Earlier this year he was found guilty of abuse of office and of paying for sex with an underage prostitute - a Moroccan-born nightclub dancer nicknamed Ruby the Heart Stealer. He is appealing the conviction.

President Putin, 60, made the remarks, which provoked laughter from his audience, at the Valdai Club, a Kremlin-backed international discussion forum.

He also criticized any liberalization of laws on gay marriage and same-sex couples.

Mr Berlusconi counts President Putin as a close friend and the pair appear to enjoy each other's company, having met numerous times at international summits.

The Russian leader told a conference in 2011: "However much they nag Signor Berlusconi for his special attitude to the beautiful sex, he has shown himself a responsible statesman."

Mr Berlusconi drew back this week from threats to bring down the coalition government led by Enrico Letta, the centre-Left prime minister.

The repeated threats, made over the summer, were highly destabilizing, but on Thursday the media magnate changed tack and said that political stability was exactly what Italy needs.

"A crisis at this moment would be destabilising and stability is a good thing," he said during the inauguration of the headquarters of his new Forza Italia party, in his first public appearance in more than a month.
