As stocks in Japan plunged more than 5.5pc and the Nikkei had its largest single-day loss since the 2001 attacks on the US, traders in the world's second largest economy were "in a panic" and the government was stuck.
日本で株価が5.5%以上も下がり、日経が2001年のアメリカへのテロ攻撃以来、一日で最大の損失を被る中、世界第2位の経済大国のトレーダーは「パニック」に陥り、政府は硬直してしまった。

The Nikkei closed below 13000 for the first time in two years, dragged down by credit problems linked to the subprime mortgage crisis in the US.
アメリカのサブプライム・モーゲージ危機に関連する信用問題に引きずられ、日経は2年ぶりに13,000円以下で取引を終了。
"It's largely a sense of panic in Tokyo, despite the hopes, because it has finally come home that the Bush administration is incompetent," said Kenneth Courtis, former chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia. "They have been incompetent handling Hurricane Katrina, Iraq and now they can't handle the economy."

The Japanese government is as paralysed, he said, but that is more a domestic political issue as Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is unable to get legislation past an upper house dominated by the opposition but, more important, is desperate to hang on to power ahead of the Group of Seven summit scheduled for July in northern Japan.
日本政府は麻痺状態だけど、どっちかっつーと福田康夫総理大臣が野党に占領された参議院で法案を通過させられないなんて国内の政治問題の方が大きな原因だけど、もっと重要なのは、7月に日本の北部で予定されているG7サミットに先駆けて権力の座にしがみつこうと必死こいてることだよね、と彼は言った。
In response to the crisis, the Bank of Japan announced that it would keep its interest rate on hold and suggested that the Japanese economy was "slowing". Later, economics ministers told a press conference that they would closely watch plunges on the stock market, but take no immediate action.
危機に応じて、日銀は金利は据え置きでございマースと発表。
ついでに日本経済は「鈍化中」でございマースとのこと。
その後、経済担当相は記者会見で、株式市場大暴落を詳しく観察するが即時対策は一切とらない、と告げたとさ。
Investors dumped shares across the board, with exporters and financial issues among the hardest hit. The Nikkei has shed more than 9pc in two days .
投資家は全面投売り状態。
輸出銘柄と金融銘柄が一番ヒドイ目に遭った。
日経は2日間で9%以上も下がっちゃいましたとさ。
