Migrants push birth rate to highest in decades

The birth rate has soared to a 26-year high because of a surge in immigration, experts said yesterday.
Their comments followed figures from the Office of National Statistics which showed that women had an average of 1.87 children last year compared with 1.8 children in 2005 and 1.63 in 2001.
While academics said the rise had been fuelled by an increase in the number of immigrants, who have far larger families, the statistics indicated that high earners, especially older women, were also driving up the birth rate.
The ONS figures showed a seven per cent increase in births among women aged between 35 and 39. The number of children born to women aged 40 and over has doubled in the last 20 years.
Statistics also revealed that 146,944 children were born last year to mothers who did not come from Britain. In 1998 the total was 86,345. Babies born to mothers from overseas accounted for 21.9 per cent of all births last year, up from 20.8 per cent the year before.
Prof Danny Dorling, an expert in human geography at Sheffield University, said immigration had pushed the figures up.
The fall and rise in birth rates in recent years were also driven by the change in university admissions during the 1980s, he added.
"In that period many more women started to go to university which meant that they ended up delaying having children," Prof Dorling said.
"I believe the fall that we have seen was due to this group and what is happening now is that these women are now having children but at a later age than they once did.
"We are not likely to get to the replacement level - two children per woman - but that is not necessarily a concern because immigration is making up for that."
However, experts warned last night that women in the middle income bracket were being priced out of having children by a rise in house prices, a lack of tax incentives and spiralling living costs.
Jill Kirby, the chairman of the family policy group at the Centre for Policy Studies, said: "In recent years we've seen a decline in the fertility rate in middle-income groups. At the same time we've seen an increase in the fertility rate in both lower-income and higher-income groups.
"What is happening to the middle classes? We should be very concerned. These are the people who are struggling financially to have children. They don't benefit through the tax credit system and no longer get tax allowances for children.
"The overall rise in fertility rate is a good thing but for the sake of social cohesion we need to make sure that it is spread across income groups."
Overall immigration has quadrupled since 1997 when Labour came to power, and is now at unprecedented levels. Government figures for 2005, indicate that 565,000 people came to live here for at least 12 months, while 380,000 left.
Almost half came the from Third World, with the remainder from Europe, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Citizenship has been granted to nearly a million foreign nationals since 1997, Government figures showed last year.
Sir Andrew Green, the chairman of Migration Watch UK said: "These fertility figures illustrate the enormous impact of mass migration on the future of our society.
"Even with zero migration our population will increase slowly for the next 30 years. There is no justification for immigration, which will add a million to our population every five years."
Women in the West Midlands had the most children in England, with 1.96 children per woman, while the lowest rate was the North East, at 1.78 children.
