　私たちは新しい課題に直面するかもしれません。Our challenges may be new.　取り組むための道具も、新しいものかもしれません。The instruments with which we meet them may be new.　しかし私たちが成功するには、昔からの古い、勤勉や正直、勇気や公平、寛容と好奇心、忠誠と愛国心といった価値が必要なのです。But those values upon which our success depends -- honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism -- these things are old.　これは、真実です。These things are true.　この真実こそが、私たちの歴史をずっと静かに力強く前進させてきたのです。They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.

　今何が求められているかというと、こういう真実に立ち返ること。What is demanded, then, is a return to these truths.

　アメリカが誕生した年の、極寒の月のことです。凍てつく川辺で消えてしまいそうな焚き火を囲んで、いくばくかの愛国兵たちが身を寄せ合っていた時のことです。In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river.
　首都は見捨てられた。The capital was abandoned.　敵軍は前進していた。The enemy was advancing.　雪は血で染まっていた。The snow was stained with blood.
　独立戦争の行方がもっとも疑わしかったその瞬間に、この国の建国の父は、兵士たちにこの言葉を読み聞かせるよう指示したのです。「未来の世界に伝えるべし。希望と善行しか生き残れないような厳冬の極寒の中、共通するひとつの危険に危機感を抱いた街と国は、危険に立ち向かうべく乗り出したのだ」At the moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words to be read to the people:"Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive... that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it]."

　アメリカよ。困難ひしめくこの冬にあって、共通するひとつの危険を前にした今、時代を超越したこの言葉を覚えておきましょう。America:In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words.　希望と善行をもって、氷浮く凍てついた激流に再び挑んで、どんな嵐がやってこようとも耐えしのぎましょう。With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come.　子どもたちの子どもたちが語り継いでくれるように。試練に遭って私たちは、この旅路の中断を受け入れなかったと。後戻りもしなかったし、ふらつきもしなかったと。そして地平線をしっかり見据え、神の恩寵を身に受けて、自由という偉大な賜物を携えて前に進み、それを未来の世代に無事に伝えていったのだと。Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.
