北の屋蔭に消え残りたる雪の、いたう凍たるに、さし寄せたる車の轅も、霜いたくきらめきて、有明の月、さやかなれども、隈なくはあらぬに、人離れなる御堂の廊に、なみなみにはあらずと見ゆる男、女となげしに尻かけて、物語するさまこそ、何事かあらん、尽きすまじけれ。
かぶし・かたちなどいとよしと見えて、えもいはぬ匂ひのさと薫たるこそ、をかしけれ。けはひなど、はつれつれ聞こえたるも、ゆかし。

【現代語訳】

陽が当たらない北向きの屋根に残雪が凍っている。その下に停車する牛車の取っ手にも霜が降り、きらりきらりと輝く。明け方の月が頼りなさそうに光り、時折雲隠れしている。人目を離れたお堂の廊下で、かなりの身分と思われる男が、女を誘って柵に腰掛け語り合っている。何を話しているのだろうか。話は終わりそうもない。
女の顔かたちが美しく光り、たまらなく良い香りをばらまいている。聞こえる話し声が時々フェードアウトしていくのが、くすぐったい。

◆鎌倉末期の随筆。吉田兼好著。上下2巻，244段からなる。1317年(文保1)から1331年(元弘1)の間に成立したか。その間，幾つかのまとまった段が少しずつ執筆され，それが編集されて現在見るような形態になったと考えられる。それらを通じて一貫した筋はなく，連歌的ともいうべき配列方法がとられている。形式は《枕草子》を模倣しているが，内容は，作者の見聞談，感想，実用知識，有職の心得など多彩であり，仏教の厭世思想を根底にもち，人生論的色彩を濃くしている。

【最も印象に残った一行】

落し穴だったら這い上がることもできるが、断崖絶壁から足を滑らせたら、二度と再び人生に両足を下ろすことはできない。落ちることを止められるのは、死ぬ時だけだ。それでも、死ぬまで生きなければならないから、細々と駄賃稼ぎをするしかない。

暦には昨日と今日と明日に線が引かれているが、人生には過去と現在と未来の分け隔てはない。誰もがたった一人抱えきれないほどの膨大な時間を抱えて、生きて、死ぬ-----。

【コメント】
しかし、なぜこの本が全米図書賞に選ばれたのか私にはわからない。無上甚深妙法などのお経の部分はどのように英語で表現してあるのだろうか？

CHINA CONDEMNS JAPAN'S OFFERING VACCINE TO TAIWAN中国 台湾へのワクチン提供めぐり日本をけん制

China has reacted sharply to Japan's indication it may offer coronavirus vaccines to Taiwan.
It comes after Japan's foreign minister said last week the government is considering providing its extra supply to other countries and regions, including Taiwan.

Wang said Japan cannot even guarantee its own people enough vaccines at the moment. He said the media and many people, including those in Taiwan, had doubts about the offer.
Last week, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said China had blocked Taiwan's deal with a foreign vaccine maker.
Wang noted Beijing has made the utmost effort to help Taiwan. He added Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party was discouraging the use of vaccines made in China.

【原文】　　

荒れたる宿の、人目めなきに、女の憚る事ある比にて、つれづれと籠り居たるを、或人、とぶらひ給むとて、夕月夜のおぼつかなきほどに、忍びて尋ねおはしたるに、犬のことごとしくとがむれば、下衆女の出いでて、「いづくよりぞ」といふに、やがて案内せさせて、入り給ひぬ。心ぼそげなる有様、いかで過ぐすらんと、いと心ぐるし。あやしき板敷に、暫し立ち給へるを、もてしづめたるけはひの若やかなるして、「こなた」と言ふ人あれば、たてあけ所狭せげなる遣戸よりぞ入り給ひぬる。
内のさまは、いたくすさまじからず。心にくゝ、火はあなたにほのかなれど、もののきらなど見えて、俄かにしもあらぬ匂いとなつかしう住みなしたり。「門よくさしてよ。雨もぞ降る、御車は門の下に、御供の人はそこそこに」と言へば、「今宵ぞ安き寝いは寝ぬべかンめる」とうちさゝめくも、忍びたれど、程なければ、ほの聞ゆ。
さて、このほどの事ども細やかに聞きこえ給ふに、夜深き鳥も鳴きぬ。来し方かた・行末かけてまめやかなる御物語に、この度は鳥も花やかなる声にうちしきれば、明けはなるゝにやと聞き給へど、夜深く急ぐべき所のさまにもあらねば、少したゆみ給へるに、隙白くなれば、忘れ難き事など言ひて立ち出いで給ふに、梢も庭もめづらしく青み渡りたる卯月ばかりの曙、艶にをかしかりしを思し出でて、桂の木の大きなるが隠るゝまで、今も見送り給ふとぞ。

【現代語訳】

人里離れた僻地の荒廃した家に、世間から離れて暮らさなければならない境遇の女がいて、退屈に身を任せたまま引き籠もっていた。ある男が、お見舞いをしようと思って、頼りなさそうに月が浮かぶ夜、こっそりと訪問した。犬が世界の終わりを告げるよう吠えるものだから、召使いの女が出てきて「どちら様でしょうか？」と聞く。男は、そのまま案内を受けて中に入った。淋しい様子で、男が「どんな生活をしているのだろう」と思えば胸が苦しくなる。放心したまま崩壊しそうな廊下にしばらく立っていると、若々しさの中に落ち着きのある声がして「こちらにどうぞ」と言うので、小さな引き戸を開けて中に入った。
しかし、家の中までは荒れ果ててはいなかった。遠慮がちにオレンジ色の炎が奥の方でゆらゆらと揺れている。家具も女性らしく、焚いたばかりではない香が、わざとらしくなく空気と溶け合いノスタルジーを誘った。召使いの女が「門はきちんと閉めて下さい。雨が降るかもしれないから車は門の下に停めて、お供の方々はあちらでお休み下さい」と言う。男の家来が「今日は雨風を凌いで夢を見られそうだ」と内緒話をしても、この家では筒抜けになってしまう。
そうして、男と女が世間のことなどを色々と話しているうちに、夜空の下で一番鶏が鳴いた。それでも、過ぎた過去や、幻の未来について甲斐甲斐しく話し込んでいると、鶏が晴れ晴れしく鳴くものだから、「そろそろ夜明けだろうか？」と思うのだが、暗闇を急いで帰る必要もないので、しばらくまどろむ。すると、引き戸の隙間から光が差し込んでくる。男が女に気の利いたことでも言って帰ろうとすれば、梢も庭も、辺り一面が青く光っていた。その、つやつやと光る四月の明け方を、今でも想い出してしまうから、男がこの辺りを通り過ぎる時には、大きな桂の木が視界から消えるまで振り返って見つめ続けたそうだ。
