【最も印象に残った一行】
が、現実問題として政府があまりに小さくなると、｢恵まれない人に同情するならあなたがお金を出しなさい。そうしないのなら見捨てて、そのことに対するそのことに対する罪悪感とともに生きていきなさい」みたいな、福祉までもが自己責任で各自それぞれをやりなさいという状況になるのだ。
自分で誰かの靴を履いてみること、というのは英語の定型表現であり、他人の立場で立ってみるという意味だ。日本語にすれば、empathyは「共感」、「感情移入」または「自己移入」と訳されている言葉だが、確かに、誰かの靴を履いてみるというのはすこぶる的確な表現だ。

日本語的に読みにくい部分もあるが、日本人が理解しにくい、生々しい英国の現実が中学生の母親の目から語られています。
