More than 60 world leaders gathered in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the ceremony on Sunday. He paid tribute to the millions of soldiers who died.
The armistice was signed on November 11th, 1918, after four years of fighting that claimed more than 18 million lives. The war erupted after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Macron warned against unilateralism and called for unity in his speech. He said that patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism.
Some historians have compared the rise of unilateralism and hostility towards migrants to the situation during the interwar years, when fascism gained support and countries were eventually drawn into World War II.
