誰も知らない「集団就職」の真実 働くことの意味とは?
高度経済成長期に地方の中学・高校の卒業生たちが、臨時列車に乗って大都市圏に働きに出た「集団就職」。1979年生まれの私にとって、それは「金の卵」という言葉と合わせて、親世代が若かりし頃に経験したすぐ近くにある「歴史」だ。
だが、学校の授業でも習ったはずの「集団就職」には、一方で詳しい記録がほとんど残されていないという。
多くの少年少女が故郷から送り出された事実は知られているが、自治体はデータを持っておらず、実際にどれくらいの数の人たちが故郷を離れたかすらも正確には分からない。「集団就職」とは誰もが知っているようで、その内実はひどく曖昧なものでもあるわけだ。
そんななか、実際の経験者たちから当時の状況や思いを聞き取り、その実態を個々の視点から垣間見ようとしたのが本書である。特に九州や復帰前後の沖縄から京阪神・名古屋へ向かった人々を中心に証言が集められており、一般に「東北」から東京に向かう光景として語られてきた「集団就職」のイメージが捉え直される。
何より寡黙な人々が背中で語るようなシーンの一つひとつが胸に迫った。
故郷を離れる寂しさや不安、工場での劣悪な労働環境。あるいは、ふとした夕焼けの風景を見たとき、唐突に湧き上がって胸を締め付けた郷愁の念……。
おそらく取材に応じた人の大半が、著者の問いかけによって初めて自らの体験を言葉にし、その意味を人生の中に位置づけようとしたのではないか。「私たちのときは仕事の選択肢がなかったのよ。生きてゆくにはこれしかなかったのよ」といった淡々とした語りに、一口には言い表せない様々な思いが滲んでいる。
また、彼ら・彼女たちがときにわずか15歳で経験した労働現場は、現在から見ればあまりに過酷なものでもあった。だが、著者はその過酷さを単なる「残酷物語」として安易には描かない。集団就職の影の部分に目を向けつつ、その中で当時の少年少女たちが「働くこと」に何を見出し、どのような思いを糧にして人生を切り拓こうとしてきたかを、敬意とともに描き出していくのである。
本書を読んでいると、この人々の証言を歴史の狭間に埋もれさせてはならない、という著者の問題意識がひしひしと伝わってくる。
公的な記録には残されなかった人々によって、戦後の高度経済成長、さらに言えば現在の日本の土台がいかに支えられ、形作られたか。それは著者の言葉通り、いまの時代に「働くこと」の意味を考える上でも、私たちが知っておくべき現代史の一面であるに違いない。

遠い遠い過去のことと思っていたが、集団就職が昭和52年頃まであったと知り、少し驚いた。
