Whether the President-Elect can deliver on his pledge is another matter. If he does not, I suspect, the warmth of goodwill that embraced him on Tuesday night will quickly fade. By convincing a majority of Americans that they will be not just safer and more equal, but also financially better off under his leadership, Mr Obama has dished out IOUs on an industrial scale.

To many, it's extraordinary that Mr McCain lost Florida on an issue which the Republicans felt they owned - financial affairs. But his campaign gaffe in Jacksonville was a humdinger. In a bungled attempt to portray himself as a force for calm in tumultuous times, he said the "fundamentals of the economy are strong". Not even Forrest Gump could have believed that one.

An area with strong military connections, Florida was expected to place overseas wars and the domestic fight against terrorism near the top of its worry list. It did not turn out that way. Much the same as the rest of America, the people of Tampa, Tallahassee, Gainesville and many other cities across the state decided that the economy was the most important matter.

Energy, the issue that Mr McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, tried to monopolise with her incantation, "Drill, Baby, Drill", scored just seven per cent.

The real killer for McCain, however, was an erosion of support in a voting bloc that has been a bedrock of Republican loyalty: Cuban Americans. Ever since 1961 and the Bay of Pigs fiasco, a failed invasion of Castro's Cuba by a force of exiles funded by the Kennedy administration, Miami's huge Cuban community has spurned most Democrat candidates like dogs with fleas.

On election night, I had dinner with some American friends, a married couple in a comfortable Miami suburb. He is a WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant), she is the daughter of first-generation Cuban immigrants. I arrived to see her with a badge, "Cuban-Americans For Obama".

The Republican Party of Florida's former political director, Jamie Miller, told the local newspaper: "Obama should never have been in this race in Florida."

But he was, and he won. That promise to cut taxes had better come true.
