Merrill's top clients told to snap up assets

Just days after warning the US had gone into recession, Merrill Lynch is priming its richest clients to swoop on undervalued assets.

The bank's high net worth clients control $2,000bn (£1,021bn) of assets, making them a powerful source of potential support for nervous markets.
同行のお得意様が持つ資産は$2兆。

Gary Dugan, chief investment officer of Merrill's global wealth management arm, said "Three months ago we were saying hold off. We were selling equities in August and September. But the opportunities are there now."

Nick Tucker, who heads the bank's UK private client business, said: "It's no good waiting for it be on the front pages. Now is the time to look for the trends and identify the opportunities. Recession is now priced into some markets."

Last week Merrill's chief North American economist David Rosenberg said the US had entered its first full-blown recession in 16 years.

"Our clients are asking, 'what's beginning to look really cheap?'" Mr Tucker said. "Distressed credit is clearly an area where there are opportunities, as well as housebuilders and property stocks. Obviously they need to be very selective".

とタッカー氏。
「明らかに、ボロボロのクレジットはチャンスが潜んでいそうだし、住宅建設や不動産関連もそうだね。勿論しっかり選択しなくちゃいけないけど」。
Mr Dugan added: "When most economic news is bad, that's the time to buy. Our clients have been sitting on liquidity for some time. We are saying if things fall further you should definitely be buying."
ダガン氏はこう付け加えた。
「殆どの経済ニュースが悪い時こそ買う時だ。我々のクライアントはしばらく金を抱えてじっとしていた。もっと下がったら絶対買うべきだと言っている」。
Top of Merrill's list of recommended assets are natural gas futures, pharmaceutical shares and the Japanese stock market.
