HSBC shares jump on CIC investment hopes

Shares in HSBC jumped the most in almost four months in Hong Kong following the Sunday Telegraph's report that Europe's biggest bank has held talks with China Investment Corporation (CIC) over a possible investment.
サンデー・テレグラフ紙がヨーロッパ最大の銀行がCICと投資の可能性を巡って協議を行っていると報道した後、香港ではHSBCの株価がほぼ4ヶ月ぶりの急騰を見せた。
HSBC shares were up 4.2pc to HK$125 in Hong Kong today.
今日香港ではHK$125まで4.2%上昇した。
Stephen Green, HSBC's chairman, is understood to have met officials from the China Investment Corporation (CIC) several times in recent months.
HSBC会長のスティーヴン・グリーンは、この数ヶ月間に数回CIC職員と会談したと理解されている。
The discussions are thought to have included the possibility of CIC buying shares in the open market, since HSBC has no need to raise additional capital in the manner that beleaguered British and US rivals such as Citigroup, HBOS, Morgan Stanley and Royal Bank of Scotland have done.
HSBCはシティグループ、HBOS、モルガン・スタンレー、RBSといった苦境にあるイギリスやアメリカの競合銀行が行ったような形で追加資本を調達する必要は全くないので、話し合いにはCICが公開市場で株式を購入する可能性が含まれていたと考えられている。

Although HSBC was the first global financial institution to signal its exposure to the collapse of the American sub-prime mortgage sector, it is among the most strongly-capitalised banks in the world.

"We constantly aim to broaden our geographically diverse shareholder base including in a number of strategically important growth markets for HSBC," said a spokesman for the bank.

HSBC, which counts Hong Kong among its handful of stock exchange listings, is vying to become the first foreign company to list on a mainland Chinese bourse.
