THE proportion of people who regularly attend religious services has declined steadily throughout Europe in recent years. But habits vary widely across countries. According to the latest European Social Survey conducted in 2008 and 2009, over 60% of Czechs say they never attend religious services, with the exception of “special occasions” such as marriages and christenings. France, Britain and Belgium are also secular nations, with over half of respondents never going to services. The most regular attenders among the 28 countries polled are in Cyprus and Greece, where only 2.4% and 4.9% respectively say they do not go to church.

近年、ヨーロッパ全土で、定期的に礼拝に通う人の割合が徐々に減っています。しかし、習慣は国によって大きく異なります。2008年と2009年に行われた最新のEuropean Social Survey（欧州社会調査）では、60%を超えるチェコ人が、結婚や洗礼とった「特別な機会」を除いて、一度も礼拝に出席したことがないことが判明しました。フランス、英国、ベルギーも宗教的ではなく、回答者の半数以上が一度も礼拝に行ったことがないと回答しました。調査の対象となった28か国中、最も定期的に礼拝に参加する人が多かったのはキプロスとギリシャで、教会に行かないと回答した人はキプロスで2.4%、ギリシャで4.9%に過ぎませんでした。

Germany reported strong trade figures on Monday, suggesting that second-quarter growth in Europe's biggest economy could be the strongest since reunification 20 years ago.

ドイツは月曜日、貿易統計が堅調だったと伝えた。欧州最大の経済の第2四半期の経済成長が、20年前の東西ドイツ統一以降最も堅調なものであった可能性を示唆した。

The country, which is the world's second-biggest exporter after China, said provisional figures showed exports rocketed 28.5pc to €86.5bn (£72 bn) in June, the highest level since October 2008.

速報値によれば、6月の輸出は前月に比べて28.5%も増加して、2008年10月以来最高の865億ユーロになった、と中国に次ぐ世界第2位の輸出大国が伝えた。

Imports jumped 31.7pc to hit a new record of €72.4bn meanwhile, an all-time peak since statistics were first compiled in 1950, the Destatis statistics office added.

輸入も31.7%増加して史上最高の724億ユーロに達した。

"This has improved chances of the German economy having grown more rapidly in the second quarter than previously assumed," Commerzbank analyst Simon Junker said.

「Q2の独経済が予想より迅速に成長した可能性を高めた」とコメルツバンクのアナリスト。

"The German economy is bound to see its strongest quarterly growth rate since reunification" in October 1990, ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski added.

「（1990年10月の）東西ドイツ統一以降、四半期としては最も堅調な独経済の成長となりそうだ」とINGのシニア・エコノミスト。

The overall German trade surplus surged by 44pc from May to €14.1bn.

全体的な貿易黒字は5月比+44%の141億ユーロとなった。

Over the first six months of the year has risen 26pc from the same period a year earlier to €74.6bn. However, this compares with a period last year when the country was emerging from its deepest post-war recession.

2010年上半期は前年同期比+26%の746億ユーロ。
とはいえ、昨年同期は戦後最悪の不況から脱出している頃だった。

"We're seeing Germany doing better than the others right now but to some extent this is also because it did worse than the others in 2009," Deutsche Bank senior European economist Gilles Moec said.

Since then, the value of goods sold has picked up markedly, in particular to Asia which has ordered impressive amounts of German machine tools, cars and chemicals.

Corporate profits recovered strongly in the second quarter but the benefit has not yet been passed on to consumers by way of pay rises, as companies keep a tight hold on costs.

Consumer confidence is returning across Europe, according to a new index that tracks "discretionary" spending on big ticket items such as motorboats, caravans and snowmobiles.
