Why Fukushima made me stop worrying and love nuclear power
Japan's disaster would weigh more heavily if there were less harmful alternatives. Atomic power is part of the mix

A crappy old plant with inadequate safety features was hit by a monster earthquake and a vast tsunami. The electricity supply failed, knocking out the cooling system. The reactors began to explode and melt down. The disaster exposed a familiar legacy of poor design and corner-cutting. Yet, as far as we know, no one has yet received a lethal dose of radiation.

Yes, I still loathe the liars who run the nuclear industry. Yes, I would prefer to see the entire sector shut down, if there were harmless alternatives. But there are no ideal solutions. Every energy technology carries a cost; so does the absence of energy technologies. Atomic energy has just been subjected to one of the harshest of possible tests, and the impact on people and the planet has been small. The crisis at Fukushima has converted me to the cause of nuclear power.

Abnormal radiation levels reported in tap water, vegetables and milk with concerns that fish may also be affected

The WHO said the long-term effects on health from contaminated food was of greater concern that the spread of radioactive particles in the air. "A week ago we were more concerned about purely the radiation leakages and possible explosion of the nuclear facility itself, but now other issues are getting more attention, including the food safety issue," Hartl said.
"Repeated consumption of certain products is going to intensify risks, as opposed to radiation in the air that happens once, and then the first time it rains there's no longer radiation in the air."
The WHO said the spread of radiation into the food supply was more serious than it had first thought, although it added that no tainted products had reached overseas markets.

He said: "Even if you eat and drink them several times it will not be a health hazard. So I would like you to act calmly without reacting." Asked if he would be happy to give spinach and milk to his family, he said: "Of course."
His comments were reminiscent of when John Gummer, the then Agriculture Minister, was pictured with his four-year-old daughter and half-eaten hamburgers, in an attempt to calm the British public during the "mad cow disease" outbreak in 1990.
The World Health Organisation appeared to disagree with Mr Edano, announcing that radiation seeping into food and water was "a lot more serious" than previously thought.
Peter Cordingley, the organisation's Western Pacific spokesman, said: "Quite clearly, it is not what we thought in the early stages. It is more serious.
"We have seen Japanese people in grocery stores paying close attention to where their produce is coming from, and we think this is a wise practice." In a Tokyo supermarket shoppers noticeably avoided spinach marked from northern Japan. Shopper Yukihiro Sato, 75, said: "I won't buy vegetables from that area."

Many consumers in Japan shunned spinach, sold in packages that often do not show the place of origin.

Because of the huge amount of dilution that happens in the ocean, there's not much chance of deep-water fish being tainted, said Murray McBride, a professor at Cornell University who studies soil and water contamination.
"I think the ocean can handle that a lot better than the physical environment and population centers," said Jim Walsh, an international security expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a CNN consultant. "We don't want any of this to happen, but better it go out to sea than stay in Japan."
On Monday a spokesman for the World Health Organization said short-term exposure to food contaminated by radiation from Japan's damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant poses no immediate health risk.
For radiation to be an issue for rice, the contamination would have to be more severe and prolonged that what has been seen so far, said McBride, the Cornell University professor.
Soil contamination was a huge issue around Chernobyl, but the radiation emitted from the Fukushima Daiichi plant isn't anywhere near that level, he said.
"We're not at that stage; that's the scenario you have to consider if contamination gets severe enough," McBride said.・・・・・

Before we get into the details, Caracappa's bottom line is that the risk of ingesting even the most highly contaminated Japanese foodstuffs reported so far is very, very small.
結論として、現状でもっとも汚染された食品を食べても危険性はかなり小さい。
The amount of radiation a U.S. nuclear power plant worker is allowed to get in a year: 50 milliSieverts.
The amount of radiation it takes to increase your lifetime risk of cancer by 4 percent: 1 Sievert. (A Sievert is a measure of ionizing radiation's effect on human tissue; a milliSievert is a thousandth of a Sievert.)
あ)米国の原子力発電所の作業者が許されている被ばく量は、50ミリシーベルト
い)1シーベルトでガンになる危険性を4%高める
Caracappa figures someone would need to eat 41 pounds of that Hitachi spinach to reach the nuclear power plant worker's annual exposure limit.
日立市のほうれん草なら41ポンドであ)のレベル、
That translates to 820 pounds of spinach – more than two pounds a day for a year
820ポンド 一日2ポンドでい)のレベル
なお、1ポンドは約453.6グラム
To reach the radiation dose limit for a power plant worker, you'd need to drink 2,922 eight-ounce glasses of milk. To raise your lifetime cancer risk by 4 percent, you'd have to drain more than 58,000 glasses of milk. That would take you 160 years, if you drank one 8-ounce glass a day.
川俣市の牛乳に関しては、2992杯であ)のレベル、58000杯ーー、一日8杯飲んで160年間かかるーーーでい)のレベルに至る。

Japan Extended Reactor’s Life, Despite Warning

Several weeks after the extension was granted, the company admitted that it had failed to inspect 33 pieces of equipment related to the cooling systems, including water pumps and diesel generators, at the power station’s six reactors, according to findings published on the agency’s Web site shortly before the earthquake.
Regulators said that “maintenance management was inadequate” and that the “quality of inspection was insufficient.”
Less than two weeks later, the earthquake and tsunami set off the crisis at the power station.
The decision to extend the reactor’s life, and the inspection failures at all six reactors, highlight what critics describe as unhealthy ties between power plant operators and the Japanese regulators that oversee them. Expert panels like the one that recommended the extension are drawn mostly from academia to backstop bureaucratic decision-making and rarely challenge the agencies that hire them.
Like many critics of Japan’s nuclear industry, Mr. Sato attributed weak oversight to a conflict of interest that he said essentially stripped the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency of its effectiveness. The agency, which is supposed to act as a watchdog, is under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which has a general policy of encouraging the development of Japan’s nuclear industry.
The ministry and the agency, in turn, share cozy ties with Tokyo Electric and other operators ― some of which offer lucrative jobs to former ministry officials in a practice known as “amakudari,” or descent from heaven

Entergy's Vermont Nuclear Plant Gets NRC Extension
By NAUREEN S. MALIK
NEW YORK―Entergy Corp. received federal regulatory approval on Monday to extend operations at its Vermont nuclear plant by 20 years even as key elected officials try to shut the plant down.
・・・・・Even with the NRC's approval in hand, the company faces an uphill battle to win over state lawmakers who need to give their approval to extend operations at the 39-year-old plant.
・・・・・Entergy has come under come under fire over the past year or so after a number of groundwater tests showed increased levels of tritium, a radioactive material regulators say can increase the risk of cancer. The company has also been accused of misleading the public by stating in prior years that no radioactive material was transported through underground pipes, where leaks were eventually found.
The state opposition, led by Gov. Pete Shumlin, has only intensified as efforts in Japan to prevent a nuclear meltdown following a massive earthquake is raising safety concerns about nuclear power around the globe.
Last year, Vermont's legislature, led by Mr. Shumlin, who was then state senate president, voted overwhelmingly against keeping the state's only reactor open.
Gov. Shumlin said that the crisis in Japan only emphasizes the risks of keeping an aging plant open, and he is confident Vermont lawmakers will continue to support his views, he said in a recent interview.
The Japan crisis makes it more difficult for Entergy to win over lawmakers, and the company could end up suing the state in a court battle that would decide whether federal regulatory authority trumps the state's concerns, Wall Street equity and credit analysts said.
Entergy has been trying to reassure Vermonters that the plant, which has a similar design to the Fukushima Daiichi plant, is designed to withstand the most severe natural disasters historically seen in the region.
The NRC has said it won't interfere with state decisions.
The company is also facing New York state opposition in its bid to extend operations at its Indian Point nuclear plant, located about 30 miles from Manhattan. Last week, the state attorney general said it would litigate or lobby against the plant unless the NRC conducts a seismic analysis of the plant, located near the Ramapo Fault line.

"However, it is one thing to use suffering as the occasion for self reflection on personal or communal relations to the divine; it is another to blame the victims of an earthquake, for example, for provoking divine wrath," he said.
"It's mean spirited," said Dartmouth College religion professor Ronald Green. "These 'prophets' contend they know God's will, and that's just arrogant. It's a way of putting others down and elevating yourself."
"Even as religious communities struggle to find larger meanings in suffering, they usually concede, in the final analysis, that questions about why some suffer more or die earlier than others remain impenetrable mysteries," he said.
