2014年4月1日。それは、アイキャンが設立されて、ちょうど20年目にあたる。（写真は1996年頃のミンダナオの学校給食開始時）
1993年一人の会社員がフィリピンを訪れ、そこで出会った子どもたちに「何かできること」はないかと思い、翌1994年4月1日、友人と数万円を持ち寄り、アイキャンという団体を作った。その団体名には、「一人ひとりの『できること(ICAN)』」を持ち寄って活動を進めていく、という想いが込められている。
当初、無給のボランティアが中心となり、事務所もない状態で数名のミンダナオ島の子どもに奨学金を提供してきたが、20年後、多くの会員の方々や寄付者、賛同者の皆さまのおかげで、日本とフィリピンで、約60名の有給職員と何百名ものボランティアが、11の拠点・事務所で、毎年何万人もの人々の生活を向上できるようにまで成長することができた。活動も、子どもたちの「ために」、何かをあげるというものから、そこに住む人々「ともに」地域をよくしていく活動に変わっていった。
でも変わらないものもある。それは、例えば、活動や会計の情報公開の徹底であったり、倹約の精神であったり、住民と話し合い、そこから全ての活動を開始することであったり、困ったときも常に笑顔を忘れないことだったりする。これらは、全て財産とも言える。
過去20年間、多くのことを成し遂げられた一方、能力や資金、知識、そして創造力等が足りないことで、解決できない社会の課題がたくさんあった。自分たちの能力や知識がもっと高く、活動資金があり、創造力を働かせることができていれば、苦しまなくてよかった子どもたちがたくさんいる。これが悔しくてたまらない。
次の20年間、もっと努力し、成長したい。もっと多くの社会の課題を解決し、この世から貧困や紛争、自然災害で苦しむ子どもたちがいなくなるようにしたい。悔しい想いはもうしたくない。

It is the 20th anniversary of ICAN today. ( The picture was taken in 1996 when a school feeding project started in Mindanao.)
One employee visited a slum community in the Philippines in 1993 and imaged what he could do for the children. In April 1, 1994, he created an organization called ICAN with 10 thousand pesos he and his friends had as a starting capital. The name “ICAN” implies a belief that activities are carried out based on individual “ICAN(what I can)”.
At first, non-paid volunteers without any office had provided scholarship in Mindanao. 20 years later, thanks to many people who have understood the importance of this movement, more than 60 staffs with hundreds of volunteers in 11 offices in the Philippines and Japan are working to uplift living conditions of more than 10,000 children. Activities “for the children” have changed to “with” the children and adults to build better communities.
There are also things never changed. For instance, high accountability of activities and finance, a habit of thrift, planning with people in communities, and also never forgetting smiles in whatever hardship we may have. These are all our assets.
For 20 years, there are many things accomplished, while there are also many issues not yet solved due to lack of our capacity, fund, knowledge and creativity. If only we had had these, many children would not have suffered. This is what we always regret.
Next 20 years, with more efforts, we would like to develop ourselves. We would like to solve more social issues and see a society where children are far from any kind of violence such as poverty, conflict and natural calamity. We do not want to regret anymore.
