学而第一06

【原文】
子曰、弟子入則孝、出則弟、謹而信、汎愛衆而親仁、行有餘力、則以學文。

【読み下し】
子の曰わく、弟子（ていし）、入りては則ち孝、出でては則ち弟、謹みて信あり、汎（ひろ）く衆を愛して仁に親しみ、行いて余力あれば則ち以て文を学ぶ。

【通釈】
先生がいわれた、「若者よ。家庭では孝行、外では悌順、慎んで誠実にしたうえ、だれでも広く愛して仁の人に親しめ。そのようにしてなお余裕があれば、そこで書物を学ぶことだ」

【English】
Confucius said "At home, a young man should be a good son, when outside he should treat others like his brothers, his behavior should be one of trustworthy and proper, and should love the multitude at large and keep himself close to people of benevolence and morality. If after all these activities, he has any energy to spare, he should read widely to stay cultivated.

The Master said, "A youth, when at home, should be filial, and, abroad, respectful to his elders. He should be earnest and truthful. He should overflow in love to all, and cultivate the friendship of the good. When he has time and opportunity, after the performance of these things, he should employ them in polite studies."
『論語』とは、読んで字の如く「論じ語る」、孔子と弟子達や要人達との間に交された対話録。
『論語』は私たちの生き方の原点を見つめた思索の宝庫であり、人間性を磨く叡智が凝縮した永遠の古典。
読めば読むほど胸に深く沁み込む簡潔な言葉の数々。
『孟子』『大学』『中庸』と併せて儒教における「四書」の一つに数えられる。
全20編（学而第一～堯曰第二十） 構成され、編の名称は各編の最初の二文字を採ったものであり内容上の意味はない。
したがって、学而第一から順に読む必要はなくどこから読んでもかまわない。
