地球は太陽のまわりを回っている。しかし、もし、本当は太陽が地球のまわりを回っているのだといわれたら、あなたはどう思うだろうか。そんなことはおかしなことだ、ありえないと答えるだろうか。それとも、本当はそうかもしれないと考えるだろうか。実は今から四百年ほど前、これと逆の事態が起こった。地球が太陽のまわりを回っているという地動説を天文学者のコペルニクスが発表したのである。それまでは二世紀頃（ごろ）にプトレマイオスが体系化した天動説がカトリック教会公認の支配的な世界像であり、一般の人々は地球が宇宙の中心であり、太陽が地球のまわりを回っていると信じていた。地動説が発表された当時、地動説を支持したブルーノが処刑されるほど教会の力は強かった。それに対して、十七世紀初めのガリレオ・ガリレイやケプラーによる各種の発見により、それまで動いていないと信じられていた地球が、実は太陽のまわりを回っていることを証明するに至った。こうした世界の考え方そのものまでもが百八十度変わってしまうような事態を【パラダイム】の転換と呼ぶ。
こうしたパラダイムの転換をもたらした学説としてもう一つ、【進化論】が挙げられる。特に、十九世紀半ばに発表されたダーウィンの『種の起源』による進化の考え方は、人類の起源にも言及したため、大きな反響をひき起こした。それまでのキリスト教の教義で神が神の姿に似せ、人間をつくったとされていたのに対し、ダーウィンの学説は他の【有機】体と人類とを同一の進化という概念で説明するものであったからである。現在も進化論を否定するキリスト教信者が一部存在しているが、ダーウィンの学説は次世代の科学者たちによって修正、発展させられ、今や支配的な考え方として認識されている。こうした【科学革命】によるパラダイムの転換は、科学万能の時代の訪れを予告するものだったといえよう。
