Nicolas Sarkozy tells French voters who were disappointed with him during his presidential term to give him another shot at getting it right

ニコラス・サルコジ元大統領は、その任期中に失望させられたフランスの有権者に、もう一回やらせてみてくださいと訴えています。

Nicolas Sarkozy's faltering political comeback entered a new stage on Thursday as he urged voters who had been disappointed by his performance as president to give him "another chance".

ニコラス・サルコジの大統領としての手腕に失望させられた有権者に「もう一回やらせてみてください」と訴えた木曜日、彼の芳しくない政界カムバックが新たなステージに突入しました。

In a lengthy interview on Europe 1 radio, during which he took questions from members of the public who phoned in, Mr Sarkozy, the head of centre-Right opposition party UMP, declined to confirm that he would make another run for the presidency in the 2017 election.

中道右派野党UMPの党首を務めるサルコジ氏は、Europe 1ラジオの長々としたインタビューの中で、一般から電話で寄せられた質問を受け、2017年の大統領選挙に再出馬するかどうか明言するのを控えました。

However, asked for his response to those who criticised him for failing to push through badly-needed economic reforms during his five years in office from 2007 to 2012, when he lost power to the Socialist Francois Hollande, Mr Sarkozy said: "Give me another try."

しかし、2007年から社会党のフランソワ・オランド氏に負けた2012年までの5年間の任期中、切実に必要だった経済改革をやり遂げなかったとの批判に対して応じるよう求められると、サルコジ氏は「もう一回やらせてみてください」と言いました。

His interview on morning radio appeared to be deliberately timed ahead of a parliamentary motion of no-confidence in the Socialist government on Thursday afternoon.

朝のラジオ番組でのインタビューは、木曜日の午後に予定されていた社会党政権に対する不信任決議に先駆けるための、意図的なタイミングのようでした。

The motion was prompted by the government's move to push through economic reforms demanded by the European Union without a vote in parliament, where the changes were opposed by members of the rebellious left-wing of the Socialist party.

不信任決議のきっかけは、反抗的な社会党左派がこのような変更に反対した議会での決議もなく、EUが要求する経済改革を推し進めようとする政府の動きでした。

However, they stopped short of voting the government out of power as an early election would inevitably lead to a Right-wing administration, according to opinion polls.

しかし、世論調査によれば、解散総選挙なら右派政権の樹立は不可避とされているため、投票には至りませんでした。

Mr Sarkozy laid into President Hollande for his "repeated lies", saying the government had been forced to avoid a vote on economic reform because "when you've explained throughout your entire election campaign that you're going to follow Left-wing policies but you do the exact opposite, you create the conditions for a revolt."

サルコジ氏はオランド大統領の「度重なる嘘」を非難し、「左翼政策をやると選挙戦の間中言っていながら真逆をやれば、反乱を促すような状況を造り出すことになる」のだから、政府は経済改革に関する投票を回避せざるを得なかったと言いました。

However, Mr Sarkozy's rare interview came as it emerged that he is to face the latest of a series of corruption investigations, this time over his use of private jets to attend speaking engagements in the Gulf.

He is accused of complicity in the misuse of company property in what is a minor but nonetheless embarrassing case for a man who, as president, antagonised some sections of the French public with his flamboyant, "bling-bling" style.

Criticised on the Right for failing to fulful his campaign promises to carry through the economic reforms France so desperately needs, Mr Sarkozy, 60, remains a polarising figure.

右派にはフランスが切実に必要としていた経済改革を実行するという選挙公約を守らなかったと批判され、サルコジ氏（60歳）は今も意見の分かれる存在です。

He will have to fight off heavyweights within his party, such as the former prime minister, Alain Juppé, to secure nomination as the UMP's presidential candidate in a primary election next year.

来年行われる大統領選挙のUMPの大統領候補の座を獲得するために、彼はアラン・ジュペ元首相など党内の大物と闘わなければならなくなります。

Mr Juppé, 69, a more traditional conservative seen as an elder statesman, is more popular with the public, polls show, but Mr Sarkozy is backed by many party members.

After the formal interview and questions from callers, Mr Sarkozy stayed in the studio while a comedian whose irreverent imitiations of politicians form a regular and well-liked part of Europe 1's mass-audience morning radio programme joked about him and other political figures.

Afterwards, Mr Sarkozy, who burst into laughter during the sequence, said the satirist, Nicolas Canteloup, had "a fantastic talent for imitating Francois Hollande". He added: "It's more mixed when it comes to me but I'm not the best judge."

Commentators said Mr Sarkozy had appeared skittish and sometimes aggressive during the interview, and had evaded most questions about the policies he would offer in the 2017 presidential election.
