子どもが不登校でも当たり前だ

さっきの素晴らしい意見記事のパート2は、イギリスで大問題になっている不登校児についての「喝」。

全くごもっとも。

しかも丸ごと日本の状況に適用出来る。

Is it any surprise that the astonishing number of 204,000 pupils are classified as persistent truants, missing at least one day's school each week?

驚くかな204,000人の生徒が、毎週少なくとも1日は学校を休む常習不登校者に分類されたが、驚くようなことか？

In the first place, what sanctions are there to stop them skiving? The proverbial bloody good hiding went out of the window long ago, and no doubt their parent(s) could hardly care less.

第一に、彼らがほっつき歩くのを止めさせる罰はなんだ？
かつて名高いムチでひっぱたくお仕置きは疾くの昔になくなってしまい、親連中もほとんどどうでもいいと思っているのは間違いない。

All that can happen is that these children are suspended, which simply formalises the existing arrangement.

この子ども達が（単純に既存のお約束をもっともらしくするだけの）停学処分にされているからこんなことが起こるのだ。

Might it not also be, though, that schools are hardly worth attending in many cases? With low standards of achievement, violence from other pupils, and demoralised teachers being forced to spout Marxist claptrap for much of the time, school is no match for the amusement arcade.

とはいえ、学校なんて行く価値がほとんどないということもあり得るんじゃないか？
レベルは低いわ、他の生徒からいじめられるわ、ほとんどの時間をマルクス主義のたわごとをまくし立てさせられるやる気のない教師連中…。
学校なんぞゲームセンターに勝てるわけがない。

In this context, the Government's proposal to make children stay on at school until 18, further disrupting those who really want to learn, is simply demented.

この意味に於いて、本当に学びたいと思っているものを更に邪魔する、生徒を18歳まで学校に行かせるという政府の提案は、とにかく発狂モノだ。

These figures make the case for the school leaving age to be lowered to 14, provided the dole is not an option: at least such children might then learn something.

これらのデータは、失業手当という選択肢はなし、という条件で義務教育年齢を14歳まで下げる、という論拠である。
そうすれば少なくとも、この手の子どもも何か学ぶかもしれない。
