Sterling 'to strengthen in longer term' despite gloom

Sterling could strengthen in the longer term despite the dire post-Budget predictions for the currency, experts have suggested.

ポンドは危機的な予算発表後の変動予想にも拘らず、長期的には値上がりするかもしれない、と専門家。

Steve Barrow, currency strategist at Standard Bank, said that although tax hikes, soaring national debt, and excessively optimistic growth forecasts from the Chancellor were not good for the pound, other countries were in store for the same.

"One thing to bear in mind about the UK is that it is towards the forefront of the credit crisis and its policies have often been followed by other governments," he said. "What we saw in the UK this week will, in the future, probably be coming to other major countries as well as they start to control the ballooning of their debt."

After the Budget on Wednesday the pound fell by more than a cent against both the dollar and the euro, but rose slightly on Thursday.

When the market closed in London on Friday, the pound was up about a cent against the dollar at $1.4715 and marginally down against the euro at €1.1105.

Over the past year sterling has fallen 25pc against the dollar.
