ユーモアについて：「何が面白いの、これ？。」 モンティ・パイソン 『議論』
4月の最初には、傑作「スイスのスパゲッティ」(1957）を取り上げましたが、今回は、60年代の英国で流行ったBBCの番組、『モンティ・パイソンとフライイング・サーカス』から。
語学学習にも役に立ちますので(この件については、あまりユーモアはありません．．．）、下で二点、軽く触れましょう。

2021年11月に発見した動画。下の分表示と違うかもしれませんが。
「議論教室」の受付場面から始まります。このへんも学習には適しているのですが、01：15へ飛んでください。
その前に間違って「罵倒」の部屋に入ってしまってしまうのですが、そのあと、、改めて「議論」の部屋に入ります。
この記事は、たてに長いですが、寸劇は、01:15からは、2分15秒ほどです。
以下で、簡単な語彙の説明と、それに、長いせりふにだけ訳をつけました。かなり速いですよ。

6行前とちがい、unlessの後は現在完了形。「し終わったら」という意味がでる。
「申し上げましたんですれどね。払い終わらなければ議論をすることは許されていません。」
M: Well I just paid!
O: No you didn't!
M: I DID!!!

はい、ここで英語の学習。
その1
冒頭、下のやりとりがあります。
Man: Is this the right room for an argument?
Other Man: I've told you once.
Man: No you haven't!
Other Man: Yes I have.
M: When?
O: Just now.
M: No you didn't!
O: Yes I did!
日本語だと、「はい」、「いいえ」でいいのですが、英語では、前の人の使った動詞に合わせるのですね。もちろん中学校で「りくつ」は習いますが、なかなか身につきません。このスケッチでまず耳を慣らし、そのあとで、実際、友人と真似してみたらどうでしょう。
最初は、I've told you once.ですから、No, you haven'tです。
おっと、内容的には、「ですから～、です」なんて話にはなりませんね。最初から、唖然。
つぎに、when?、こう訊かれたら、過去形です。英語の「時制」はなかなか深いのです。
下には、日本語では「いえ」というところを、「Yes」と言っているところもあります。自分で見つけてください。
その2：
中、上級者向け。
たとえば、
I'm not allowed to argue unless you PAY!は聞き取れますか。講師役を勤めるジョン・クリースは、早口な上、口を動かしていません。allowedとか、unlessは、きっと耳に残らなかったのではないでしょうか。
しかし、母国語として英語を使っている限り、状況から無意識に頭が推測して、自然に意味が分かるのですね。こういうことは日本語を用いている私たちも常にしていることです。ためしに、日本語ができる外国人で、ふだんあなたが話している調子で話しかけてみてください。よっぽどの人でないかぎり、きょとんとした顔を見せますよ。
では、どうして、こういうのを聴き取れるようになるのか、といえば、こういう短い会表現を覚えてしまうことです。そして、何度もこのスケッチを聴いていると、聞いているのか、記憶で分かった気になっているのか、分からなくなります。この状態、これが大切です。この感覚を大事にして、しばらくして、また聴いてみます。そのとき、「聴こえたら」、一歩前進。そうでなかったら、忘れたなと自分に厳しく覚えなおしてください。
ああ、だいぶ、ユーモアのない話になりました。
