　終わりの価値を高める
To increase the value when you pass away from this world:

　人生は、宇宙のとてつもなく長い歴史からすれば、わずかな一閃にすぎないものかもしれない。しかしだからこそ、その一瞬に満たない生の始まりよりは終わりの価値を高めることに、われわれの生の意義も目的もある。私はそう考えています。
Our life might be only a flash of time viewed from an incredibly long history of the universe. But such as things are, the significance and purpose of our life resides in increasing the value more at the end of our life than at the beginning of that, I believe.

　もっと言えば、そうであろうと努める過程そのものに人間の尊さがあり、生の本質があるのだと思います。
To be more exact, the process where they want to be so does have humans' dignity or the essence of our life, I think.

挫折が実になる
Your failure will bear fruit in the future:

若いときに苦難に出遭っても、挫折を経験しても、絶対にへこたれてはなりません。それは、神様が与えてくれた「成長の糧」だと考えることです。神様は苦難を与え、それを糧にして、「今から人生を素晴らしく生きなさい」と励ましておられるのです。
Even if you face difficulties or experience some faults when you are young, you should not give in to them. You should consider it to be a good chance to your growth given by God. God is giving you some hardship and encouraging you to live a wonderful life from now on, based on that experience.

苦しみの先にある喜び
Pleasure ahead of hardship:

仕事における喜びというのは、飴玉のように口に入れたらすぐ甘いといった単純なものではない。労働は苦い根と甘い果実を持っているという格言のとおり、それは苦しさやつらさの中からにじみ出してくるもの。仕事の楽しさとは苦しさを超えたところに潜んでいるものだ。
The joy in your job is not so simple as candy, which, when put in your mouth, is sweet right then. As the proverb saying labor has a bitter root and a sweet fruit, the joy of the work comes from hardship or pain. It is what is lurking beyond the pain of job.

魂の旅立ち
Departure of our souls from this world:

死によって私たちの肉体は滅びますが、心魂は死なずに永世を保つ。私はそのことを信じていますから、現世での死とはあくまでも、魂の新しい旅の始まりを意味します。
Our physical bodies collapse when we die, but our souls will not die and keep their eternity. I believe in that, so in my thoughts, the death in this world means the beginning of the new journey of the soul.

だからその旅立ちに向けて周到な準備をすべく、最後の二十年は人生とは何かを改めて学び、死への準備をしたい。そう考えて得度を決意したわけです。
So, I think I would like to make preparations for my death, learning again for the last twenty years in my life what life is, in order to make a thorough preparation for my soul's departure from this world to a new journey. Thinking so, I decided to enter into the Buddhist priesthood.

人生の勲章
Decoration for our lives:

私たちは魂だけを持って来世に行く。財産も名誉も持っていけない。一人で旅立たなければならない。勲章は、より美しくなった魂、心の輝きだけなのである。
We will move on to the next lives only with our souls. We could not bring with us neither any assets nor honors. We have to leave alone. The decoration at that time is only our souls which have become better than when we were born, that is, only the shining of our hearts.
