【漢文】

孔子曰、不知命、無以爲君子也、不知禮、無以立也、不知言、無以知人也。

【書き下し文】
孔子曰わく、命を知らざれば、以て君子たること無きなり。礼を知らざれば、以て立つこと無きなり。言を知らざれば、以て人を知ること無きなり。

【現代語訳】

孔子がおっしゃいました、
「自分に与えられた天命を理解しなければ、人々の手本となって指導する事などできない。礼の持つ意味を理解しなければ、人として立つ事はできない。言葉を理解しようとしなければ、人間を理解する事などできない」

【English】
Confucius said, "You cannot be a gentleman if you don't understand heaven's will. You cannot stand if you don't understand the courtesy. You cannot understand people if you don't understand language."

読んで字の如く「論じ語る」、孔子と弟子達や要人達との間に交された対話録。

『論語』は私たちの生き方の原点を見つめた思索の宝庫であり、人間性を磨く叡智が凝縮した永遠の古典。

読めば読むほど胸に深く沁み込む簡潔な言葉の数々。

『孟子』『大学』『中庸』と併せて儒教における「四書」の一つに数えられる。

全20編（学而第一～堯曰第二十） 構成され、編の名称は各編の最初の二文字を採ったものであり内容上の意味はない。

したがって、学而第一から順に読む必要はなくどこから読んでもかまわない。

父の告白

（前半略）

「父さんは赴任直後に、部下で三十六歳の女の人を好きになったのよ。十年も関係が続いたの。その内女の夫が病気で亡くなり、自分も定年で、不倫が終わったのね。許してくれって私に誤るの」

「なんで今更そんな告白するの。八十にもなってどうかしている」

「私も黙っててほしかった。父さんのアルバムからその女の写真を見つけて、気が変になりそう」

老いて弱気になった父は死を間近に感じて、妻に告白したのだろう。父は気が済んでも母は重荷を背負うのだ。五十歳の真紀さんは男の身勝手に腹が立ち、母を守らねばと決心した。
