The world's largest exhibition of manga outside Japan has opened at the British Museum in London.
The exhibit features about 70 works by 50 manga artists and explores the origins of the popular Japanese art form.
The exhibition highlights how the roots of Japanese manga lie in centuries-old picture scrolls and ukiyoe woodblock prints.
It showcases a range of themes often found in manga works, from sexual diversity to the indigenous Ainu culture in northern Japan.
Organizers hope the exhibit will lead to a deeper understanding of manga among not only younger generations but a wide audience.

(Nicole Rousmaniere / Exhibition Curator)
"This is a powerful visual language, a visual way of storytelling that is only getting more and more current with Instagram, with social media. And it's becoming a world global phenomenon."
The British Museum first began exhibiting manga in 2006, and since then has regularly added comic books and original drawings to its collection.
