出エジプト記１章

さて、これらはヤコブと共にエジプトに来たイスラエルの子孫の名であり、人々はみなその家来を連れて来ました。
2 ルベン、シメオン、レビおよびユダ。
3 イサカル、ゼブルン、ベニヤミン。
4 ダン、ナフタリ、ガド、アシェル。
5 ヤコブの腰から出た魂はみな七十人でしたが、ヨセフはすでにエジプトにいました。
6 ヨセフは死に、その兄弟達もみな死に、その世代もみな死にました。
7 イスラエルの子孫は実を結び、豊かに増えて、勢いを増し、地は彼らによって満たされました。
8 さて、エジプトに、ヨセフを知らない新しい王が生まれました。
9 彼はその民に言いました。
「見よ！イスラエルの子孫の民は、私達にとって多すぎて強すぎる。
10 さあ、彼らが増えて、私達に戦いが起こると、彼らも私達の敵に加わって戦うことでしょう。彼らを国から追い出さないように、彼らと賢く付き合おうではないか。』」
11 そこで、彼らはイスラエル人達の上に労使を置き、その重荷で彼らを苦しめました。そして、彼らはパロのためにピトムとラムセスという倉庫都市を建てました。
12 しかし、彼らを苦しめれば苦しめるほど、彼らはますます増え、また、広く行き渡っていきました。そして、彼らはイスラエルの子孫のために慕われました。
13 エジプト人はイスラエルの子孫を厳しく仕えさせました。
14 エジプト人はモルタルや、れんがや、畑でのあらゆる奉仕で、彼らの命を苦しめ、そのすべての奉仕で、彼らを苦しめ、奉仕をさせました。
15 エジプトの王はヘブル人の産婆に語りました。その名は一人をシフラといい、もう一人をプアと言いました。
16 そして言いました。
「あなたがたはヘブル人の女に産婆の務めをする時、見よ！それが男の子であれば、殺さなければならないが、娘であれば、生かさなければならない。」
17 しかし、産婆達は神を恐れて、エジプト王の命じたとおりにせず、男児を生かしておきました。
18 エジプトの王は産婆達を呼び寄せて言いました。
「あなたがたはなぜこのようなことをして、男の子供たちを生かしておいたのか。」
19 産婆達はパロに言いました。
「ヘブル人の女はエジプト人の女と違って、生き生きとしていて、産婆が来る前に産むからです。」
20 神は産婆達をよく扱われたので、民は増えて、非常に力強くなりました。
21 そして、産婆達が神を恐れたので、神は彼女達の家に栄えさせました。
21 助産婦たちは神を恐れたので、神は彼女たちの家を栄えさせた。
22 パロはそのすべての民に命じて言いました。
「あなたがたは生まれた男の子をみな川に投げ捨て、娘をみな生かしておかなければならない！

 

1 さて、ヤコブといっしょに、それぞれ自分の家族を連れて、エジプトへ行ったイスラエルの子たちの名は次のとおりである。
2 ルベン、シメオン、レビ、ユダ。
3 イッサカル、ゼブルンと、ベニヤミン。
4 ダンとナフタリ。ガドとアシェル。
5 ヤコブから生まれた者の総数は七十人であった。ヨセフはすでにエジプトにいた。
6 そしてヨセフもその兄弟たちも、またその時代の人々もみな死んだ。
7 イスラエル人は多産だったので、おびただしくふえ、すこぶる強くなり、その地は彼らで満ちた。
8 さて、ヨセフのことを知らない新しい王がエジプトに起こった。
9 彼は民に言った。「見よ。イスラエルの民は、私達よりも多く、また強い。
10 さあ、彼らを賢く取り扱おう。彼らが多くなり、いざ戦いというときに、敵側について私達と戦い、この地から出て行くといけないから。」
11 そこで、彼らを苦役で苦しめるために、彼らの上に労務の係長を置き、パロのために倉庫の町ピトムとラメセスを建てた。
12 しかし苦しめれば苦しめるほど、この民はますますふえ広がったので、人々はイスラエル人を恐れた。
13 それでエジプトはイスラエル人に過酷な労働を課し、
14 粘土やれんがの激しい労働や、畑のあらゆる労働など、すべて、彼らに課する過酷な労働で、彼らの生活を苦しめた。
15 また、エジプトの王は、ヘブル人の助産婦たちに言った。そのひとりの名はシフラ、もうひとりの名はプアであった。
16 彼は言った。「ヘブル人の女に分娩させるとき、産み台の上を見て、もしも男の子なら、それを殺さなければならない。女の子なら、生かしておくのだ。」
17 しかし、助産婦たちは神を恐れ、エジプトの王が命じたとおりにはせず、男の子を生かしておいた。
18 そこで、エジプトの王はその助産婦たちを呼び寄せて言った。「なぜこのようなことをして、男の子を生かしておいたのか。」
19 助産婦たちはパロに答えた。「ヘブル人の女はエジプト人の女と違って活力があるので、助産婦が行く前に産んでしまうのです。」
20 神はこの助産婦たちによくしてくださった。それで、イスラエルの民はふえ、非常に強くなった。
21 助産婦たちは神を恐れたので、神は彼女たちの家を栄えさせた。
22 また、パロは自分のすべての民に命じて言った。「生まれた男の子はみな、ナイルに投げ込まなければならない。女の子はみな、生かしておかなければならない。」

Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt already.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
9 And he said unto his people: 'Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us;
10 come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there befalleth us any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.'
11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were adread because of the children of Israel.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour.
14 And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigour.
15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah;
16 and he said: 'When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birthstool: if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.'
17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.
18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them: 'Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?'
19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh: 'Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.'
20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.
22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying: 'Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
