徒然草 第三十段

【原文】　　

人の亡なき跡ばかり、悲しきはなし。
中陰のほど、山里などに移ろひて、便あしく、狭き所にあまたあひ居ゐて、後のわざども営み合へる、心あわたゝし。

日数の速く過ぐるほどぞ、ものにも似ぬ。

果ての日は、いと情なう、たがひに言ふ事もなく、我賢こげに物ひきしたゝめ、ちりぢりに行きあかれぬ。もとの住みかに帰りてぞ、さらに悲しき事は多かるべき

「しかしかのことは、あなかしこ、跡のため忌いむなることぞ」など言へるこそ、かばかりの中に何かはと、人の心はなほうたて覚ゆれ。
年月経へても、つゆ忘るゝにはあらねど、去る者は日々に疎うとしと言へることなれば、さはいへど、その際ばかりは覚えぬにや、よしなし事いひて、うちも笑ひぬ。

骸からは気うとき山の中にをさめて、さるべき日ばかり詣でつゝ見れば、ほどなく、卒都婆も苔こけむし、木の葉降り埋づみて、夕べの嵐、夜の月のみぞ、こととふよすがなりける。
思ひ出て偲ぶ人あらんほどこそあらめ、そもまたほどなく失せて、聞き伝ふるばかりの末々は、あはれとやは思ふ。さるは、跡とふわざも絶えぬれば、いづれの人と名をだに知らず、年々の春の草のみぞ、心あらん人はあはれと見るべきを、果ては、嵐に咽し松も千年を待たで薪に摧かれ、古き墳は犂かれて田となりぬ。その形だになくなりぬるぞ悲しき。
　

【現代語訳】

人が死んだら、すごく悲しい。
四十九日の間、山小屋にこもり不便で窮屈な処に大勢が鮨詰め状態で法事を済ませると、急かされる心地がする。

その時間の過ぎていく速さは、言葉で表現できない。

最終日には、皆が気まずくなって口もきかなくなり、涼しい顔をして荷造りを済ませ、蜘蛛の子を散らすように帰っていく。

帰宅してからが、本当の悲しみに暮れる事も多い。

それでも、「今回はとんでもない事になった。不吉だ、嫌なことだ。もう忘れてしまおう」などと言う言葉を聞いてしまえば、こんな馬鹿馬鹿しい世の中で、どうして「不吉」などと言うのだろうと思ってしまう。

死んだ人への言葉を慎んで、忘れようとするのは悲しい事だ。人の心は気味が悪い。
時が過ぎ、全て忘却を決め込むわけでないにしても「去っていった者は、だんだん煩わしくなるものだ」という古詩のように忘れていく。

口では「悲しい」とか「淋しい」など、何とでも言える。

でも、死んだ時ほど悲しくないはずだ。

それでいて、下らない茶話には、げらげら笑い出す。

骨壷は、辺鄙なところに埋まっており、遺族は命日になると事務的にお参りをする。

ほとんど墓石は、苔生して枯れ葉に抱かれている。

夕方の嵐や、夜のお月様だけが、時間を作って、お参りをするというのに。
死んだ人を懐かしく思う人がいる。

しかし、その人もいずれ死ぬ。

その子孫などは、昔に死んだ人の話を聞いても面白くも何ともない。

そのうち、誰の供養かよくわからない法事が流れ作業で処理され、最終的に墓石は放置される。

人の死とは、毎年再生する春の草花を見て、感受性の豊かな人が何となくときめく程度の事であろう。

嵐と恋して泣いていた松も、千年の寿命を全うせずに、薪として解体され、古墳は耕され、田んぼになる。

死んだ人は、死んだことすら葬られていく。

◆鎌倉末期の随筆。吉田兼好著。上下2巻，244段からなる。1317年(文保1)から1331年(元弘1)の間に成立したか。その間，幾つかのまとまった段が少しずつ執筆され，それが編集されて現在見るような形態になったと考えられる。それらを通じて一貫した筋はなく，連歌的ともいうべき配列方法がとられている。形式は《枕草子》を模倣しているが，内容は，作者の見聞談，感想，実用知識，有職の心得など多彩であり，仏教の厭世思想を根底にもち，人生論的色彩を濃くしている。

JAPAN CRACKS DOWN ON DISTRACTED DRIVING“ながら運転”の罰則強化

Japan is cracking down on drivers who use smartphones or other devices behind the wheel.
Fines and penalty points have both been increased. People who cause accidents while using mobile devices face immediate suspension of their licenses. There have been a number of accidents caused by distracted driving.
In 2016, a minivan hit two women in the western city of Tokushima while the driver was playing a smartphone game. One of the women died and the other suffered serious injuries.

"If the driver had just been paying attention, my friend would be alive today."

The victim says distracted driving can destroy a life in an instant and leave the bereaved in unbearable agony. She hopes the tougher penalties will help eliminate the problem.

徒然草 第二十九段

静かに思へば、万に、過ぎにしかたの恋しさのみぞせんかたなき。
人静まりて後、長き夜のすさびに、何となき具足とりしたゝめ、残し置かじと思ふ反古など破り棄つる中に、亡なき人の手習ひ、絵かきすさびたる、見出いでたるこそ、たゞ、その折の心地すれ。このごろある人の文だに、久しくなりて、いかなる折、いつの年なりけんと思ふは、あはれなるぞかし。手馴れし具足なども、心もなくて、変らず、久しき、いとかなし。
　

【現代語訳】

静かに瞑想して想い出す。どんな事もノスタルジーだけはどうにもならない。
人々が寝静まった後、夜が長くて暇だから、どうでもよい物の整理整頓をした。恥ずかしい文章を書いた紙などを破り捨てていると、死んだあの子が、歌や絵を書いて残した紙を発見して、当時の記憶が蘇った。

死んだ人はもちろん、長い間会っていない人の手紙などで「この手紙はいつ頃の物で、どんな用事だっただろう？」と考え込んでしまうぐらい古い物を見つけると、熱いものがこみ上げてくる。

手紙や絵でなくても、死んだ人が気に入っていた日用品が、何となく今日までここにあるのを見れば、とても切ない。
