伝道者の書７章

良い名声は尊い油にまさり、死の日は生まれた日にまさる。
A good name is better than precious oil; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
1 良い名声は良い香油にまさり、死の日は生まれる日にまさる。

2 宴の家に行くよりは、喪の家に行く方がよい。
それはすべての人の終わりであって、生きている者はそれを心に刻むからである。
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart.
2 祝宴の家に行くよりは、喪中の家に行くほうがよい。そこには、すべての人の終わりがあり、生きている者がそれに心を留めるようになるからだ。

3 悲しみは笑いにまさる。悲しげな表情が心を良くするからだ。
3 Vexation is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart may be gladdened.
3 悲しみは笑いにまさる。顔の曇りによって心は良くなる。

4 知者の心は喪の家にあるが、愚か者の心は笑いの家にある。
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
4 知恵ある者の心は喪中の家に向き、愚かな者の心は楽しみの家に向く。

5 愚か者の歌を聞くことよりは、知恵ある者の叱責を聞く方がよい。
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
5 知恵ある者の叱責を聞くのは、愚かな者の歌を聞くのにまさる。

6 鍋の下のいばらの響きのように、愚か者の笑いもまた虚しい。
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool; this also is vanity.
6 愚かな者の笑いは、なべの下のいばらがはじける音に似ている。これもまた、むなしい。

7 圧制は必ず知恵ある者を愚かに変えてしまう。賄賂は理解ある者を滅ぼす。
7 Surely oppression turneth a wise man into a fool; and a gift destroyeth the understanding.
7 しいたげは知恵ある者を愚かにし、まいないは心を滅ぼす。

8 ものごとの終わりは、その始めにまさる。
精神的に忍耐強い者は、精神的に高慢な者に勝る。
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
8 事の終わりは、その初めにまさり、忍耐は、うぬぼれにまさる。

9 怒りは愚か者の懐にとどまるからである。怒りは愚か者の胸の内にある。
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
9 軽々しく心をいらだててはならない。いらだちは愚かな者の胸にとどまるから。

10 あなたは言ってはならない。
『どうして昔の方が、これよりもすぐれていたのか。』と。
10 Say not thou: 'How was it that the former days were better than these?' for it is not out of wisdom that thou inquirest concerning this.
10 「どうして、昔のほうが今より良かったのか」と言ってはならない。
このような問いは、知恵によるのではない。

11 知恵は嗣業をもって益となり、太陽を見る者には益となる。
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance, yea, a profit to them that see the sun.
11 資産を伴う知恵は良い。日を見る人に益となる。

12 知恵は、金が身を守るように、身を守るものである。
しかし、知識の素晴らしさは、知恵がそれを持つ者の命を守ることである。
12 For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.
12 知恵の陰にいるのは、金銭の陰にいるようだ。知恵の益は、知恵がその持ち主を生かすことにある。

13 神のわざを考えよ！神が曲げたものを、誰がまっすぐにすることができるだろうか。
13 Consider the work of God; for who can make that straight, which He hath made crooked?
13 神のみわざに目を留めよ。神が曲げたものをだれがまっすぐにできようか。

14 栄える日には喜び、逆境の日には思い巡らすがよい。
神が一方と他方を同じように造られたのは、人間の後に何も見出せないようにするためである。
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; God hath made even the one as well as the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
14 順境の日には喜び、逆境の日には反省せよ。これもあれも神のなさること。それは後の事を人にわからせないためである。

15 私はむなしい日々のうちに、すべての事を見た。
正しい人のうちには、その正しさのうちに滅びる者があり、悪い人のうちには、その悪行のうちに命を長らえる者がある。
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity; there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.
15 私はこのむなしい人生において、すべての事を見てきた。
正しい人が正しいのに滅び、悪者が悪いのに長生きすることがある。

16 あなたは義を重んじてはならない。己を過信してはならない。なぜ己を滅ぼすのか。
16 Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise; why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
16 あなたは正しすぎてはならない。知恵がありすぎてはならない。なぜあなたは自分を滅ぼそうとするのか。

17 あなたは悪を重ねてはならない。あなたは愚かであってはならない。
なぜ汝はその時よりも早く死なねばならないのか？
17 Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish; why shouldest thou die before thy time?
17 悪すぎてもいけない。愚かすぎてもいけない。自分の時が来ないのに、なぜ死のうとするのか。

18 あなたは一つを握り、また他のものから手を離してはならない。
神を畏れる者は、それらすべてから自らを解き放つからだ。
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of the one; yea, also from the other withdraw not thy hand; for he that feareth God shall discharge himself of them all.
18 一つをつかみ、もう一つを手放さないがよい。神を恐れる者は、この両方を会得している。

19 知恵は町の十人の支配者にまさって、知恵ある者の拠り所となる。
19 Wisdom is a stronghold to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.
19 知恵は町の十人の権力者よりも知恵者を力づける。

20 地の上には、善を行い罪を犯さない正しい人は一人もない。
20 For there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
20 この地上には、善を行い、罪を犯さない正しい人はひとりもいないから。

21 また、あなたの僕が、あなたを呪うのを聞かないように、語られるすべての言葉に注意してはならない。
21 Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;
21 人の語ることばにいちいち心を留めてはならない。あなたのしもべがあなたをのろうのを聞かないためだ。

22 あなたの心も、しばしば、あなた自身が人を呪ったことを知っているからである。
22 for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
22 あなた自身も他人を何度ものろったことを知っているからだ。

23 私はすべてのことを知恵で試してみた。
「私は知恵を得るだろう。」と言ったが、それは私には遠かった。
23 All this have I tried by wisdom; I said: 'I will get wisdom'; but it was far from me.
23 私は、これらのいっさいを知恵によって試み、そして言った。「私は知恵ある者になりたい」と。しかし、それは私の遠く及ばないことだった。

24 それは遠くて深い。誰が見いだすことができるだろうか。
24 That which is is far off, and exceeding deep; who can find it out?
24 今あることは、遠くて非常に深い。だれがそれを見きわめることができよう。

25 私は心をめぐらせて知ろうとし探そうとし、知恵と物事の道理を追求し、悪と愚かさを知り、愚かさと狂気を知った。
25 I turned about, and applied my heart to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know wickedness to be folly, and foolishness to be madness;
25 私は心を転じて、知恵と道理を学び、探り出し、捜し求めた。愚かな者の悪行と狂った者の愚かさを学びとろうとした。

26 私はその女が死よりも苦いのを見いだした。その心はわなであり、網であり、その手は帯である。
神を喜ばせる者は彼女から逃れられる。しかし，罪人は彼女に捕えられる。
26 and I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands; whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
26 私は女が死よりも苦々しいことに気がついた。女はわなであり、その心はかせである。神に喜ばれる者は女からのがれるが、罪を犯す者は女に捕らえられる。

27 「見よ！私はこのことを見いだした。」とコヘレトは言う。
一つの事を他の事に付け加えて、その勘定を調べようとした。
27 Behold, this have I found, saith Koheleth, adding one thing to another, to find out the account;
27 見よ。「私は道理を見いだそうとして、一つ一つに当たり、見いだしたことは次のとおりである」と伝道者は言う。

28 このことは私の魂が捜し求めても、見いだせなかったものである。
千人のうちから一人の男を見いだしたが、すべての人のうちから一人の女を見いだせなかった。
28 which yet my soul sought, but I found not; one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
28 私はなおも捜し求めているが、見いださない。私は千人のうちに、ひとりの男を見いだしたが、そのすべてのうちに、ひとりの女も見いださなかった。

29 見よ！私が見いだしたことは、ただ神が人をまっすぐに造られたこと。これだけである。
29 Behold, this only have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
29 私が見いだした次の事だけに目を留めよ。神は人を正しい者に造られたが、人は多くの理屈を捜し求めたのだ。

1 良い名声は良い香油にまさり、死の日は生まれる日にまさる。
2 祝宴の家に行くよりは、喪中の家に行くほうがよい。そこには、すべての人の終わりがあり、生きている者がそれに心を留めるようになるからだ。
