夏の終わりを告げるもの

８月もあと少し。

夏の終わりって、どんな時に感じますか？

日本なら、
日中は暑くても朝夕は涼しさを感じるとき、
夜には虫の音が聞こえるとき、
ざるそばより、あったかいそば食べたいって思う時かなぁ。

There is a few days left in August.

When do you feel the summer is ending?

In Japan,

I used to feel summer will finish
when I feel cool in the morning and evening although it’s still very hot during the day,
and l can hear the singing voices of insects in the evening
and I want to eat hot soba rather than cold soba,

トロムソでの夏の終わりを告げるものは何だろう？
What lets us notice that the summer is ending in Tromso?

先週くらいから、木の葉も色づいてきました。

The leaves on the trees started changing colors about last week.

でも、夜中の太陽こそ見えませんが、夜8時でも太陽はまだ輝いています。

それはそれは、眩しい！

真夜中でさえ、真っ暗ではないのです。

we can’t see the midnight sun, but the sun is still bright even at 8 in the evening.
It’s really bright!
The sky is not dark even at midnight.

でも、夕陽の生み出すコントラストは愁いを帯びてきたよう。

But the contrast of the light from the setting sun is looking a little bit sad.

ほ～～！と、ちょっぴり哀愁に浸りつつ、毎晩空を眺めています。

だって、太陽に会えなくなる日が来るのですもの。

I have been watching the sky with awe and a bit of sorrow every evening.
Because I know the day we can’t see the sun will come later.

二日前、一番星を見つけました。(それまでは明るくて、星は見えなかったのです)

これから、少しずつ星の数が増えていくのでしょう 。
ということは、
星も、夏の終わりを教えてくれるっていうこと？

日本の夏の夜、草の上に寝転がって、たーくさんの星を眺めていたのが、懐かしい～！

I found the first star last two days ago!
(This is because it wasn’t dark enough to see stars until then.)
The number of stars we can see will increase little by little from now.
That means ･･･
here the stars also tell us the summer is ending, don’t they?

I feel nostalgic for having lain on the grass and looked up at a lot of stars in the summer evening in Japan!

     

夏の夜は長いのです。

トロムソでは、どこかにコテージを持っているという話をよく聞きます。

７月に、お友だちのコテージにお邪魔しました。
コテージは自然の中にあるもので、
お友だちのコテージからも
山に登れるし、前の海に遊びに行けます。

In Tromsø I often hear that somebody has a cottage somewhere.
We visited the cottage of a friend in July.
Cottages are usually surrounded with nature.
We can walk on the mountain and also go to sea from our friend’s cottage.

彼女のお父さんお母さんが、自分たちで作ったそうで、
もともとコテージというものは、手作りだったそうです。

トイレは家の外にあって水洗ではないけど、
まったく快適。(長年の研究の成果のようです）
インターネットもなく、薪ストーブをたき、
節水したりしながら過ごしていると、
日常のもやもやを忘れます。

Her parents built it by themselves, originally the cottages used to be handmade.
The toilet is outside and not flush toilet.
But it’s very comfortable.（It seems to be the result of delopment over a long time)
With a firewood stove,
and having to save on the water,
and being without internet,
I forget ordinary worries.

バーべキューをして、いっぱい喋って、１２時前。そろそろ眠る時間。
その時、彼女が言いました。
「さあ、釣りに行こうか！」
えっ？　確かにそんな話はしてたけど･･･
「だけど、雨が降ってるのよ！」
「これくらいの雨、どうってことないよ」と二人ともニコニコ。
ま、明るいし･･･夜中雨の中、釣りに出かけました。

We had a barbecue, and talked a lot, and it was just before midnight.
It was nearly time for me to sleep.
At that time, she said,
“Let’s go fishing!”
Um? Well, we talked about it.
“But now it’s raining! ”
“It’s not raining a lot, so no problem!” Both had smiles.
And it’s still bright･･･we left for fishing, in rain at midnight.

彼女も相方さんも釣りに集中している。
だけど、竿一本しかないし、
釣れるんかいなと半信半疑の私は、
寒さに震えながら、海岸の岩や草花の写真を撮っている、しかない。

She and my husband are concentrating on fishing.
But I was just taking photos of rocks and plants on the beachside while shaking with cold,
because there was only one fishing rod
and I was suspicious about whether we could really catch a fish.

ところが！ふと見ると、魚がジャンプしている！
「あっち、あっち！」
すると、釣れた！それも、高価なトラウト！！！

But! I took a look and saw that some fishes were jumping!
“That direction. That!”
And he caught a fish, a precious sea trout!!!

これぞ、ノルウェー･･･！

彼は、やっぱりノルウェー人なんやわあ･･･

This is Norway for real･･･！

He is still a Norwegian･･･

 

昨日、私たちはやっと冷凍してあったあのトラウトを頂きました。

彼女や他のお友だちと一緒にディナーパーティーをして。

相方さんがさばいて調理して、美味しく話も盛り上がりました。

ああ、ここの夏の夜は、実に長い。

Yesterday we finally ate that trout which we had kept in the freezer,
at a dinner party with our cottage friend and other friends.
My husband cut and cooked it, and we enjoyed eating and talking.

Oh, summer night here is really very long.

いよいよベリー摘みの季節！

今週はずっといいお天気が続いています。

例年は、もっと曇ったり雨が降ったりするそうです。
相方さん曰く、「これは9月のようだ」。

そのせいでしょうか？
庭のレッドリップスも例年より早く、赤くなってきています。

It has been sunny days all this week.
It is usually more cloudy or rainy this time of year.
My husband says, ‟it seems like September”.

I guess that is why the fruit of red rips is getting red earlier than normal.

いつになったら、ジャムが作れるかなあと思っていたら、
ちょうどレッドリップスジェリーを作るのにいい頃なのだそうです。
えっ、ジェリー？　私食べたことないなあ～。
じゃあ、作ってみよう！
そこで、相方さんの妹さんに頼んで一緒に作ってもらいました。

When I was thinking “when can I make jam of it”, I heard that now is a good time to make jelly.
Hm? Jelly? I’ve never eaten it.
Then I’ll try making it?
So I asked my husband’s sister and we made the jelly together.

まずは、レッドリップス摘み。
夏の夕日を受けて、彩りが美しい！
この時間が大好きでとっても幸せ。
毎年の梅摘みを思い出すなあ。

First, picking.
That color is so beautiful in the evening sunlight of summer!
I like this time and I’m very happy.
It reminds me of picking Ume every year.

さっと洗って。

Rinsing quickly

少量の水を入れて、少し煮ると、うーんいい香り。
Boiling in a little water, umm, good smell!!

ジュースをこして砂糖を入れて煮る。
Getting juice and boiling

さあ、あとは瓶に入れて待つだけ。
Now just waiting after pouring into glass jars.

先日は、日本人との持ち寄りランチでミートボールに添えてみました。

この組み合わせ、こっちでは普通のこと。
美味しんですよ、これが！！

On the other day we tried the jelly with meatballs for lunch, with some Japanese friends.

This taste arrangement is normal here.

This is very delicious!

 夏の終わりにかけて、

レッドリップスの他に、ブルーベリー、ラズベリーも採れるんですって。
うーん、楽しみ！

We can pick blueberry and raspberry, in addition to red rips,
over the end of summer.
I’m looking forward to it!

 

 

 

 

あの魚が、この魚！

Arendalで食べたあの魚、

何っていうんだったっけ？

これが、今朝一番に目覚めて思ったこと。

“What is the name of the fish we ate in Arendal?”

It was the first idea in my mind when I woke up this morning.

朝食前、身近にあった本を何気に手に取って、ぱらぱら･･･
「この魚って、何？」
「Arendalのレストランで食べたあの魚だよ」。

えっ？すご!!!

Just before breakfast I took a book and opened a page without thinking.

“What is this fish?”
“It’s the fish we ate in Arendal”.

？ Oh,great!!!

日本ではこんなに大きな魚の切り身をステーキで頂くことはあまりない。
また、この食感がもちもちで、私には初物でした。
お野菜もほんとに美味しかったです。

ちなみにその名は、ステインビット（Steinbit）

In Japan we don’t often eat fish cut in so big slices, and grilled.

And it had a texture which was a first for me.
And the vegetables were also very nice!

Its name is Steinbit.

クリスチアンサンとアーレンダールは
ノルウェーのほぼ南の端。
北海道と沖縄が違うように全く違いました。

相方さんの姪っ子ちゃんの結婚式のおかげで
また素敵なところに連れて行ってもらいました。
ありがたいことです。

Kristiansand and Arendal are located in the southmost part of Norway,
and are different from Tromso in the way Hokkaido and Okinawa are.

Thanks to the wedding of my husband's niece,
I could again visit nice places.
I appreciate it very much.

ルーツを訪ねて

 皆さま、いかがお過ごしですか？

（日本の皆さま、暑中お見舞い申し上げます！）

8月、トロムソで初めて迎えました。　

I hope you are all faring well.
(To my friends in Japan, 
I hope you are well in the hot summer.)

I have welcomed the start of August in Tromso.

先週は、相方さんのお父さんの故郷、ロホテン（Lofoten）を訪ねました。
相方さんの先祖を想っているうちに、バイキングまで身近に思えてきました。
ロホテン（Lofoten）は、昔からの漁業の盛んなところで、フィヨルドや山の景色が壮大で、面白い！
とりあえず、写真でご紹介しますね。

I visited the home place of my husband’s father, Lofoten, last week.
While I was imagining his ancestry, even Vikings feel more real to me.
Lofoten is a traditional area for fishing, with a great scenery of fjords and dramatic mountains.

In any case, I’ll show you the pictures!
