先日のESLで、
hear through the grapevine
というのは「噂話を耳にする」というイデオムであるというのを耳にした。
ちょうど今話題になっているSTAP細胞に懐疑的なKnoepfler Lab Stem Cellブログで、この表現を目にした。

意味は
新しいSTAP細胞のトラブル？：幹細胞のコミュニティでの噂話で（割り引いて考えないといけないかもしれないが？）Nature誌のSTAP細胞のNature論文の問題に関する調査が、PubPeerや他のサイトで、すでに指摘されていた胎盤とDNAゲルの画像問題以外の部分にも及んでることを耳にした。
起こるとすれば、何が次に待ち受けているのだろうか？
ってな感じになるだろうか。
ちなみに、
take ～ with a grain of saltは、～を真に受けない、割り引いて考える
the other shoe(s) to dropは、次に必ず待ち受けているもの
を示すイディオムらしい。
それにしても、なんだかな。
