【原文】　
大臣の大饗は、さるべき所を申し請けて行ふ、常の事なり。宇治左大臣殿は、東三条殿にて行はる。内裏にてありけるを、申されけるによりて、他所へ行幸がうありけり。させる事の寄せなけれども、女院の御所など借り申す、故実なりとぞ。 

【現代語訳】　　
大臣昇進のお披露目は、しかるべき会場を用意して開催するのが通例である。頼長左大臣は東三条殿で行った。近衛天皇の皇居だが、会場に申請されたので、天皇は他へ避難した。親しい間柄でなくても、皇室の女性の住まいを借り上げるのが、古来の習わしである。

◆鎌倉末期の随筆。吉田兼好著。上下2巻，244段からなる。1317年(文保1)から1331年(元弘1)の間に成立したか。その間，幾つかのまとまった段が少しずつ執筆され，それが編集されて現在見るような形態になったと考えられる。それらを通じて一貫した筋はなく，連歌的ともいうべき配列方法がとられている。形式は《枕草子》を模倣しているが，内容は，作者の見聞談，感想，実用知識，有職の心得など多彩であり，仏教の厭世思想を根底にもち，人生論的色彩を濃くしている。

どれもが人間賛歌を歌い上げている作品ばかりだ。因みにつゆのひぬまとは、
梅雨の晴れている間、〝梅雨の干ぬ間〟 ではなく、〝露の干ぬ間〟つまり露が蒸発するまでのほんのつかの間のことです。

【原文】　
世に従はん人は、先づ、機嫌を知るべし。序で悪き事は、人の耳にも逆ひ、心にも違ひて、その事成ならず。さやうの折節を心得うべきなり。但し、病を受け、子生うみ、死ぬる事のみ、機嫌をはからず、序で悪しとて止む事なし。生・住・異・滅の移り変る、実の大事は、猛き河の漲り流るゝが如し。暫も滞らず、直に行ひゆくものなり。されば、真俗につけて、必ず果たし遂げんと思はん事は、機嫌を言ふべからず。とかくのもよひなく、足を踏み止どむまじきなり。
春暮れて後、夏になり、夏果てて、秋の来るにはあらず。春はやがて夏の気を催し、夏より既に秋は通ひ、秋は即ち寒くなり、十月は小春の天気、草も青くなり、梅も蕾みぬ。木の葉の落つるも、先づ落ちて芽ぐむにはあらず、下より萌きざしつはるに堪へずして落つるなり。迎ふる気、下に設けたる故に、待ちとる序で甚だ速し。生・老・病・死の移り来きたる事、また、これに過ぎたり。四季は、なほ、定まれる序あり。死期は序でを待たず。死は、前よりしも来きたらず。かねて後に迫せまれり。人皆死ある事を知りて、待つことしかも急ならざるに、覚ずして来たる。沖の干潟遥かなれども、磯より潮の満みつるが如し。

【現代語訳】　　
一番の処世術はタイミングを掴むことである。順序を誤れば、反対され、誤解を与え、失敗に終わる。そのタイミングを知っておくべきだ。ただし、病気や出産、死になると、タイミングなど無く、都合が悪くても逃れられない。人は、この世に産み落とされ、死ぬまで変化して生き移ろう。人生の一大事は、運命の大河が氾濫し、流れて止まないのと同じなのだ。少しも留まることなく未来へと真っ直ぐ流れる。だから、俗世間の事でも成し遂げると決めたなら、順序を待っている場合ではない。つまらない心配に、決断を中止してはならない。
春が終わって夏になり、夏が終わって秋になるのではない。春は早くから夏の空気を作り出し、夏には秋の空気が混ざっている。秋にはだんだん寒くなり、冬の十月には小春の天気があって、草が青み、梅の花も蕾む。枯葉が落ちてから芽が息吹くのでもない。地面から芽生える力に押し出され、耐えられず枝が落ちるのである。新しい命が地中で膨らむから、いっせいに枝葉が落ちるのだ。人が年老い、病気になり、死んでいく移ろいは、この自然のスピードよりも速い。季節の移ろいには順序がある。しかし、死の瞬間は順序を待ってくれない。死は未来から向かって来るだけでなく、過去からも追いかけてくるのだ。人は誰でも自分が死ぬ事を知っている。その割には、それほど切迫していないようだ。しかし、忘れた頃にやってくるのが死の瞬間。遙か遠くまで続く浅瀬が、潮で満ちてしまい、消えて磯になるのと似ている。
