What do you do with broken glass? Japanese researchers say they invented a type that you don't have to throw away. All you need to do is press.
This is the world's first self-healing glass. A group at the University of Tokyo has discovered it can be fixed by pressing shards together for 20 to 30 seconds. Several hours later, the glass even regains its original hardness.
(Yu Yanagisawa / Graduate student, University of Tokyo)
"I hope the repairable glass will end the cycle of making things, breaking them, and throwing them away, and lead to a more eco-friendly approach."
The researchers say they accidentally stumbled across the material when they were working on developing new adhesives.

People across the country have been preparing for the New Year in the traditional way by pounding rice with mallets. But in the city of Kitakyushu, they're doing it in epic fashion.
About 100 people took part in the year-end event at Kokura Castle. They worked in pairs to pound freshly-steamed glutinous rice before putting it into molds. When they're done, they'll have a cake one meter in diameter, containing 225 kilos of rice. The creators plan to decorate it with items said to bring good luck, including persimmons and strips of kelp.
(Participant)
"It was fun. The hammer was heavy."
"I wasn't thinking of anything except making the rice cake taste good."
The rice cake, called "kagami mochi," will be on display at the castle for two weeks from next Saturday.
