An international organization says stocks of the Pacific bluefin tuna are on the increase. The finding may lead to higher catch limits for Pacific Rim countries like Japan, starting as early as next year.
Numbers of the prized fish are closely monitored due to concern over shrinking reserves. But a report by a group that studies stocks in the Pacific Ocean says the adult bluefin population has been rebounding from a record low of about 12,000 tons in 2010. They estimate the supply grew to some 21,000 tons in 2016. Officials are now confident of achieving their goal of boosting the bluefin stocks to 43,000 tons by 2024.
Participants of an international conference last year agreed on a mechanism to raise catch limits should the bluefin population recover. They plan to discuss whether to expand those limits at a meeting they've scheduled for September.
