The Science of Candles is a book based on Michael Faraday's research on candles in the 1830s. This book explains how a candle flame burns and what chemical reactions occur.
After reading this book, I was struck by the beauty of candle flames. The way the flames flicker and emit light is as beautiful as a work of art, and I think everyone can sympathize with its beauty.
The book also reveals that the candle flame is actually the result of a chemical reaction. The oxygen necessary for combustion is sucked in from around the candle, and carbon and hydrogen combine with the oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. I once again felt that this kind of scientific knowledge is related to the things we use on a daily basis.
However, after reading this book, I also learned that harmful substances are generated when carbon particles are burned. Therefore, it has been suggested that burning candles for a long time may adversely affect indoor air quality.
By reading Candle Science, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the beauty of candle flames and their scientific background. I was able to realize once again that chemical reactions and scientific knowledge are involved in the things we use casually in our daily lives.
