ここらへん、一応注目しておくと、日本の外交というか、戦略というのは、正義も云々するけれども、関係を重視してしまって、正義を引っ込めてしまう場合がある。どちらがいいか、それは難しいところですがそんな印象をもった。
で、オバマ大統領の今回の作戦を正当化する筋書きというのは、
I've made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam, because bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own.
So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.
Over the years, I have repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was. That is what we've done. But it's important to note that our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding. Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people.
Tonight, I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterparts. They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations. And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.

Counterterrorism officials and experts described bin Laden’s death as a devastating blow to the terrorist network he helped found and build. For nearly a decade after the Sept. 11 attacks, bin Laden loomed as a symbol to emerging Islamist extremists, a man who had bloodied the most powerful nation in the world and seemed until Sunday as if he might elude that country’s desperate grasp.
But experts also said that bin Laden in recent years had served much more as a symbol than as an operational figure, and that the implications of his death for al-Qaeda are not entirely clear.

Analysts said Bin Laden’s death amounted to a double blow for Al Qaeda, after its sermons of anti-Western violence seemed to be rendered irrelevant by the wave of political upheaval rolling through the Arab world.
“It comes at a time when Al Qaeda’s narrative is already very much in doubt in the Arab world,” said Martin S. Indyk, vice president and director of foreign policy at the Brookings Institution. “Its narrative was that violence was the way to redeem Arab honor and dignity. But Osama bin Laden and his violence didn’t succeed in unseating anybody.”
Al Qaeda sympathizers reacted with disbelief, anger and in some cases talk of retribution. On a Web site considered an outlet for Al Qaeda messages, forum administrators deleted posts by users announcing Bin Laden’s death and demanded that members wait until the news was confirmed by Al Qaeda sources, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, an organization that monitors radicals.
Even so, SITE said, sympathizers on the forum posted messages calling Bin Laden a martyr and suggesting retaliation. “America will reap the same if the news is true and false,” said one message. “The lions will remain lions and will continue moving in the footsteps of Usama,” said another, using an alternate spelling of Bin Laden’s name.
In the United States, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an advocacy organization, said it welcomed Bin Laden’s death. “As we have stated repeatedly since the 9/11 terror attacks, Bin Laden never represented Muslims or Islam,” the group said in a statement. “In fact, in addition to the killing of thousands of Americans, he and Al Qaeda caused the deaths of countless Muslims worldwide.”

For weeks, the nation's political discourse has been dominated by the silly and stupid. Donald Trump has challenged the president's legitimacy, only to be humiliated by Obama's provable birth certificate. Now, it is clear that while Obama was contesting that fatuous challenge to his leadership, he was simultaneously sifting intelligence of the most sensitive nature and authorizing an action of stupendous consequence.
Sunday night's announcement should remind the nation that the presidency is not just an office to be contested and that American values are not merely empty words to be used as political rhetoric. Obama ordered the seizure of America's most vile enemy, who resisted and was shot down. The world is better and safer for his death.

The killing of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden is an important victory in the battle against terrorism, prime minister Mark Rutte said on Monday.
‘Osama bin Laden has done terrible deeds,’ Rutte said, while congratulating US leader Barak Obama for the success of the operation.
‘Nevertheless, the war on terror is not yet over,’ news agency ANP quoted Rutte as saying.
Bin Laden was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad, the BBC reports.
Court
Defence minister Hans Hillen said the killing of the terror network leader is a symbolic act but not one that will make the world a safer place.
'Terrorism is a many-headed monster and there will always be a new leader', he told Nos radio.
‘It is a shame he was not taken alive. A trial is always better,’ Hillen said.

On internet forums sympathetic to al-Qaeda, a majority of commentators seem shocked by the reports of bin Laden’s death.
In the past, when US officials announced the death of high-ranking al-Qaeda members, commentators often rejected those reports out of hand. But the latest announcement by Obama, on the other hand, seems to be viewed as somewhat more credible.
“If it is true then we must thank Allah that America was not able to capture him alive,” one commentator wrote. “Else they would be humiliating him like Saddam Hussein.”
“God willing, news is not true. Catastrophic if it is authentic,” another wrote.
The US state department issued a worldwide travel alert for American citizens, and the US military increased its “force protection” level, which measures threats to military bases. A senior administration official said there were no specific threats reported, though.
'No other country was informed'
One pressing question is what bin Laden’s death means for the already strained US-Pakistani relationship. The two countries have clashed publicly in recent months over US drone strikes in northwest Pakistan and over the case of Raymond Davis, the CIA contractor arrested for murder in Lahore and then released after “blood money” was paid to the families of his victims.

RT's military analyst Colonel Evgeny Khrushchev looks back at how Al-Qaeda, with Osama Bin Laden, became a major terrorist movement.
“[America] was a perpetrator of the anti-Soviet jihad, which was used as a proxy-war against the Soviet Union by the medium of the jihad-driven insurgency,” he said.
“On the second stage of the ‘jihad’, when America almost officially joined in from cover to overt aggression against Afghanistan and the Soviet Union by default, they brought in and started recruiting mercenaries from the Arab countries, therefore trying to spread Wahabism and Salafism [extreme form of Sunni Islamism supporting violent jihad] into the peaceful Sufi Muslim religion of Afghanistan, mostly.”
It was at that time, Khrushchev continued, when Osama Bin Laden became one of the main financers and organizers of the Arab mercenaries.
“[They] came [to Afghanistan] to make money and spread their violent and extremist ideology, which was financed jointly by Saudi Arabia, but mostly led, directed and trained by the United States of America, and orchestrated by the Central Intelligence Agency,” the military analyst concluded.
