Ever since I joined the Judo club at Nagoya University, I realized that there happens to be one thing that our boys talk about more than anything except Judo, and this was the topic of girls. This is quite natural, as of course our little club is composed mostly of high testosterone males in their early 20s and late teens, however, Ishikawa-san always stood out. Since joining the club, Ishikawa-san hadn’t given us any sign of being interested in women, which often led to jokes coming from other members that he might be playing for the other team, so one day Evan and me took Ishikawa-san out for drinks, and decided (after we were all fairly drunk) that we were going to hit the streets and find Ishikawa a girlfriend!
There are certain problems with being underrage, the biggest being that it is not easy to get into clubs, so me, Evan and Ishikawa decided to hit the streets. Me and Evan went up to one girl and “proposed” Ishikawa to her, emphasizing on how big his muscles are and how he is going to become a doctor in the future. However, when the obviously interested woman turned to look at Ishikawa, we realized that Ishikawa was not there. He had already run halfway across town. Even though we attempted a few more times, and before every attempt Ishikawa promised to man up, he ran away every time.
But the more I thought about that day, the more I realized that being shy is not the only reason my good friend does not chase after girls, and for that matter nobody in the Judo club doesn’t. It is because Judo requires commitment, and often one cannot afford to have the free time or mental strength to think about girls because Judo requires just that extra commitment and self discipline. Judo truly is the sport of the strong, but that does not just require only physical strength, but also the mental strength to hold back on what is not good for you and does not contribute to you becoming better at Judo or a better person. I thank my team for showing me this reality.
