NEW YORK – Marin Cilic capped a season of comeback in a year of breakthroughs at the top of men's tennis with his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open on Monday.
Cilic, a 25-year-old Croat seeded 14th, dominated 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 54 minutes. Nishikori was also contesting his maiden major final.
In cool, windy conditions on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Cilic fought off a break point in the opening game with a sizzling forehand winner.
From there, he dominated Nishikori with a combination of 100-mph groundstrokes and 130-mph serves, continuing the form that saw him rout five-time U.S. Open winner Roger Federer in the semifinals in straight sets.
Nishikori finally converted his first break point in the second set to close to 4-5, but Cilic laced a forehand winner up the line to break back and take a two-sets-to-none lead.
