小生の好きなタイプのオアカーですが、当時はローラーベアリングが装着されていなかったようです。鉄鉱石をいっぱいに積んだ列車は、鉱山からスペリオール湖まで勾配を駆け下ってきますが、ブレーキのかけっぱなしになるため、写真のような煙にまみれた姿になるそうです。

With the recent talk of roller bearing versus friction bearing trucks
on the Missabe ore car fleet, here is a shot from nine years ago when
most of the older low sides were still in service and all had friction
bearing trucks with oiled journals. This is what ore trains looked
like coming down Proctor Hill until roller bearing trucks started to
appear on the mini-quad fleet (and now on many of the low sides). I
remember being able to trace the progress of a loaded ore train coming
down the Hill simply by watching the moving cloud of brake shoe smoke.
