　展望車セント・ニコラス・マウンテンは、実物もレストアが進められていますが、３Ｄアニメーションも製作されています。いつものグレートノーザンアーカイブに、新しい３Ｄアニメーションが投稿されましたのでご紹介します。セント・ニコラス・マウンテンの展望側から室内に入り、反対側のドアから出て、連結面を見るという「フライバイ」です。お楽しみください。

DoodlebugかGalloping Gooseか？

　写真のガスエレクトリックカーは、グレートノーザン鉄道の「Doodlebug」(「蟻地獄」の意味）です。しかし、グレートノーザン鉄道の支線の一部（特に東部）では、「Galloping Goose」と呼ばれていたとの証言が、gngoatに寄せられました。私たちの感覚では、Galloping Gooseと言うとリオグランデの例の車両のことと思いますが、gngoatによりますと、グレートノーザンだけでなく、ＮＰやＵＰの一部でもガスエレクトリックカーをGalloping Gooseと呼んでいたそうです。


貨車の壁

　Gngoatからの写真です。今年のグレートノーザン鉄道歴史協会の総会が開催予定のワナッチー近郊のロックアイランドカーブでの最近の写真です。グレインローディングホッパー列車の長時間露光です。

マニュアル・カー・ムーバー

　Gngoatからの話題です。Watervillで、ＧＮロゴマーク入りの写真のようなものが発見されました。これは、車輪の下に差し入れて、梃子の原理で簡単に人力で貨車を転がせる道具だそうです。

　ＧＮの元職員の方によると、俗には「Pincher」と呼ばれ、これを使うことをPinching a car等と言うそうです。グレインエレベーター等の引込み線で、貨車を定位置にちょっとだけ動かす際に良く使われたとのことです。

凄い写真

　グレートノーザン鉄道の蒸気機関車Ｅ－８　１０６０号機を燃やしています。これは、クロスヘッドかピストンロッドの修理をする際に、周辺部をあらかじめ熱くするためとのことです。技術的な点は良くわかりませんが、いずれにせよ、豪快な修理です。
　以下説明を転載します。

The pix of 1060 with all the smoke is a very interesting and certainly rare shot. I can't say where it is, but you will notice the smoke is coming from a fire on the ground around the position of the front driver. This tells me they were going to weld a broken crosshead or piston rod while still on the engine. The welder builds up a pre-heating fire to get the parts as hot as he can before he welds. The fire would usually be allowed to burn 12 hours prior to the actual welding. After the welding, the fire remains and is allowed another 12 hours to gradually burn out. The reason for this is to make certain there is no stress buildup in the parts due to the welding, or it will break very soon again. Obviously it is better to do this outdoors than in the shop. It is not so likely to burn the shop down

貨車移動機

　Ｏｒｅｒａｉｌからの写真です。現在のＣＮの貨車移動機（Ａ．Ｋ．Ａ）です。なぜか横向きの小型トラクターが動力源のようです。貨車3両程度を引っ張る力があるそうです。

National Train Day

　5月10日は、今年からアメリカの「Ntional Train Day」となりました。これは、139年前の1968年5月10日に、ユタ州プロモントリー峠で大陸横断鉄道（ＣＰとＵＰ）をつなぐ最後のスパイク「ゴールデンスパイク」が打ち込まれたことを記念するものです。ニューヨーク、ワシントン、シカゴ、ロサンジェルスの4つの駅でイベントも予定されているようです。

天然氷　その３

　このブログの3月28日版と4月26日版で取り上げた天然氷の件ですが、gngoatに写真が無いか聞いておりましたところ、更に1956年の写真を投稿して頂けましたので紹介します。

　写真は、1956年3月3日、ホワイトフィッシュ湖での、天然氷の切り出し作業です。写真の場所は、毎年夏には（今でも）ボートドックになるところだそうです。
　なお、ホワイトフィッシュに最近できたレストラン「Little Red Caboose」（カブースの形をしているそうです！）には、グレートノーザン鉄道の写真等が飾られているそうですが、オーナーは天然氷関係の写真を5枚持っている上に、当時使われていた器具(ice saw, tongs etc.)も保存されているそうです。

March 03, 1956:
New method of loading ice in the annual harvest from Whitefish Lake under way now at the city beach. A small electric motor on the framework above the trucks powers two friction winches so that the huge blocks of ice, weighing approximately 350 pounds, are drawn up on the truck ready to be slid into place with no further handling. The contract is to supply more than 9,000 tons needed by the Western Fruit Express Company. The method of loading, much quicker and safer than those used in previous years, was devised by the contractors.
