1955, 21 February: Ice Harvest Begins Today
Whitefish (ILNS) - Annual ice harvest at Bay Point on Whitefish Lake began today after mild weather caused a three-week delay in the project, according to ice contractor Ed McKenzie.
The consistently low temperatures the last few days have made ice conditions good, promising an above average haul this season. The ice thickness at present is 13 inches, more than production has been started with in previous years.
McKenzie said that with 60 employees working seven days a week, the 8,000-ton quota of ice can be produced in about three weeks. Most of the solid water will be stored and used at the local Great Northern Railway terminal while the remainder will be distributed along the line.
The job was initially scheduled to begin Feb. 1 and has been slated for each week since then, but weather unfavorable to the creation of ice suitable for cutting prevented the operation. The occurrence of a water seam delayed the work last week. If this ice had been cut, it would have broken into thin sheets as a result of the seam.
Irrigation pumps were employed by McKenzie to flood the 20-acre harvest area with lake water in a recent effort to increase the ice thickness. Two plows have also been used to keep the ice clear of snow.
The lake was opened up Saturday to allow full scale production to begin today. The few loads that were taken from these cuttings were sold to parties in Columbia Falls and the North Fork.
Mrs. Wayne McDowell of Whitefish helps regulate the passage of ice up channel to a loading dock as women go to work this year for the first time helping harvest the annual Great Northern Railway ice cut off Whitefish Lake.
