テキストブックの査読

テキストブックの査読は、いろいろと考えた末、お断りすることにした。教えているコース関連のテキストブックといえども、社会学的なアプローチから書かれている本なので、私の今の能力では限界がある。またまだ知らない内容の方が多いので、とても査読できる立場ではない。しかも締め切りは２週間先。　

ワードのシングルスペース６枚に渡り、質問項目がぎっしり並ぶ。たとえば、最後の方ではそれぞれの章について細かく感想を述べ、自分が現在使っているテキストと比較しながら、教員の立場で評価することになっている。いくつか質問項目を挙げてみる。

How well does the organizational plan of the chapter meet your needs? Would you recommend any changes to its organization? Are any topics missing or covered in too little or too much detail? How does the coverage in this chapter compare with that of the corresponding chapter in your current text or other course materials? Is the scholarship current and soundly interpreted? How does it compare with that of the corresponding chapter in your current text or course materials? Please include citations for specific research you think should be covered in the chapter. Is the writing engaging at an appropriate level for your students? Is the material well paced? How does the writing compare with that of your current text or course materials? Please comment on the first-person accounts in this chapter. Do you find these to be effective? Why or why not?　What tables, charts or graphs, images, or pedagogical features would you recommend adding to this chapter, other than those already indicated? 

テキストブックを注意深く読み、６枚の質問項目に応じた文書を作成するだけで、１００時間くらいかかりそうなプロジェクト。しかし、このような査読システムがあるからこそ、大学のテキストブックの質向上に役立つのだと教えられる。

私は過去に何度か、日本の大学のテキストブックの執筆にかかわらせていただいたが、編者の人からのフィードバックのみで、しかもそれも限られている。学生や授業のニーズを深く吟味し、最新の分野の知見を取り入れているかなどの検討はほとんど行われていないのではないかと考える。
