June 4th is Cavity-Prevention Day or Tooth Decay Prevention Day,
the start of Dental Hygiene Week in Japan.
I went to the dentist’s on June 4th to get my teeth cleaned.
My dental hygienist told me that it was Cavity-Prevention Day, so I was lucky.
Without knowing it, I’d made an appointment for a cleaning on the same day, June 4th!
Luckily, I didn’t have any cavities! I love sweets so I should count myself lucky
not to have gotten any cavities so far in my life! So far, so good! (^.^)
Later in the day, I had a language exchange session with a student of mine.
She explained why June 4th is called Cavity-Prevention Day, in Japanese MUSHIBA YOBOU NO HI
or MUSHIBA YOBOU DAY. The latter, “MUSHIBA YOBOU DAY“, seems to be more popular.
I found this name funny because it’s part Japanese and part English, but an accepted name
in Japanese! Amazing! (^.^) I think Dental Hygiene Week is a great idea and a great chance
to teach people public proper dental hygiene so that they can keep their teeth strong and healthy.
The Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989, commonly referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre,
were a series of demonstrations led by students, intellectuals, and labor activists in the
People's Republic of China between April 15 and June 4, 1989.
While the protests lacked a unified cause or leadership, participants were generally critical
of the ruling Chinese Communist Party and voiced complaints ranging from minor criticisms to calls
for full-fledged democracy and the establishment of broader freedoms.
The demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, but large-scale protests ... occurred in cities throughout China, including Shanghai, which stayed peaceful throughout the protests.
In Beijing, the resulting military crackdown on the protesters by the PRC government
left many civilians dead or injured.
This report on the Tiananmen Square Massacre appeared in The Times on June 5, 1989.
The violent repression by the Chinese authorities of this peaceful student-led protest in the main square
in Beijing (Peking) led to widespread international condemnation. The 100,000-strong gathering in
Tiananmen Square had been the culmination of several months of pro-democracy demonstrations.
When government demands that the students disperse were ignored, tanks and troops were sent in.
Hundreds died, up to 10,000 were injured, and widespread arrests, trials,
and executions of pro-democracy leaders followed.
