At the first Independent show he met the painter and collector Hamilton
Easter Field. Field has never been given his due as one of the earliest sponsors
of modern art in this country. A Quaker, of some means, owning three old houses
on Columbia Heights in Brooklyn, he was a man of wide and advanced taste.
More than one young artist owed his first encouragement to Field; he bought their
pictures, he helped them financially, he opened a gallery in his house to show
their work. Spotting Kuniyoshi's paintings in the Independent, he invited him to
spend the summer at Ogunquit, Maine, where he ran a summer school; in the
winter he gave him an apartment in one of his Brooklyn houses; and for some
time he paid him fifteen dollars a week in exchange for odd jobs which left him
time to study at the League and to paint. The second summer in Ogunquit, 1919,
Kuniyoshi and Katherine Schmidt were married. After their marriage Field
offered them the Brooklyn apartment and the Ogunquit studio rent-free, but they
were soon able to pay their way. After Field's untimely death in 1922 the Kuni-
yoshis continued to live on Columbia Heights for about ten years.
