しかし生活をしていくには販売は少なすぎ価格は低すぎました、そこでクニヨシは、
芸術作品の写真家として意を決し、自分自身の作品を写して自分自身で学びました。
写真撮影は彼に合っていました、そして彼はすぐに習得しました。　５年間ぐらいの間
彼は冬の時期に写真家として働き、出来るときに絵を描いていました。

キャサリン・シュミットは、リーグのレストランを運営するフルタイムの仕事をしました。
でも夏は彼らのものでした、オガンクィットで絵を描いてすごしたのでした。
経済的には厳しい時期でした、でも彼らは唯生きるだけでなく充実した人生を送りました、
画家や作家の多くの友人達と共に。　彼のワイフの友情に対する天賦の才能はクニヨシの
長い間堪え忍んだ孤立から抜け出す助けになりました、そして彼に画家の中で安定した
場所を与えたのでした

But sales were too few and at too low prices to furnish a living, so Kuniyoshi
set himself up as a photographer of works of art, teaching himself by taking
his own paintings. Photography suited him and he learned it quickly. For five
years or so he worked as a photographer in the winter, painting when he could.
Katherine Schmidt took a full-time position running the restaurant at the League.
But their summers were their own, spent painting in Ogunquit. Financially these
were hard years, but they managed not only to survive but to lead a full life, with
many friends among artists and writers. His wife's gift for friendship helped to
draw Kuniyoshi out of the isolation he had suffered for so many years and to give
him a secure place among artist.
