Miller combined penetrating comprehension of the fundamentals of form
and design with remarkable understanding of the individual student and ability
to bring out his creative gift. In his class there was none of the deadly uniformity
of academic schools. Kuniyoshi's student work was quite unlike anyone's else -
fluent in drawing, with a great deal of movement, and with a fullness of color that
suggested Renoir and to a less extent Cézanne. It had little resemblance to the
first pictures he was to do after leaving the League. All students are imitative to
some degree, and for Kuniyoshi the combined impact of Western art, the old
masters and modernism was especially overpowering. He remained at the League
four years, studying with Miller the whole time. For the last three years a job
scholarship paid his tuition and something beside. At the League he made many
lasting friends, among others Alexander Brook, Katherine Schmidt, Reginald
Marsh, Peggy Bacon, Henry Schnakenberg and Arnold Blanch. Brook became
his closest male friend; they shared a similar enjoyment of life and uninhibited
sense of humor.
