1966年8月に発表したビートルズの13枚目のオリジナルシングル。

ポールが出だしのメロディとデイシー・ホーキンスという孤独な登場人物を思いつきました。
名前をエリナー・リグビーに変更。

もうひとりファザー・マッカートニーという人物を考案したものの、父と勘違いされるのを嫌いマッケンジー神父に変えました。

形式的で形骸化されてきた教会へのシニシズム（嘲笑主義）が盛り込まれています。



歌詞の意訳

エリナー・リグビーは結婚式を終えたばかりの教会でお米を拾う。＊１

夢見心地で、

窓脇の壜にしまっているとっておきの顔をまといながら窓辺に佇んでいる。＊２

いったい誰のために。


マッケンジー神父は誰も聴く人とて来ない説教の原稿を書いている。

仕事中の彼をご覧！

誰もいない夜中に靴下を繕っているんだよ。


エリナー・リグビーは死んで、教会の片隅に葬られた。

マッケンジー神父は墓を掘った泥をぬぐっている。


孤独な人たちはいったいどこから来て　どこへ帰っていくのだろう。


＊１　米を投げて当てられることは、やがて花嫁衣裳を着て幸福になる予兆。
けれどエリナーは拾うことしかすべがなく一般的な幸福感から乖離している。


＊２　自分では美しいと錯覚しているが、現実はそうではない。自分はまだ誰かを惹きつける魅力があるのだと頑なに信じている。
